Giving Comfort is a Team Effort

The first thing you'd notice about the six Chihuahua puppies that were brought to Kitsap Humane Society on September 10th is just how breathtakingly cute they were. The second thing was that they were absolutely covered in ticks. So many that they appeared as dense black tick thickets on their fur. So many that when you gently shook a puppy, the ticks would rain down on the floor. The pups were in misery.

So KHS' Dr. Naomi, Veterinary Assistant Ella, and TJ and Sebastian from Admissions went to work. Donning gowns and gloves secured with duct tape - and armed with combs and tweezers - the quartet began meticulously de-ticking the tiny puppies as best they could. To make matters worse, it was discovered that one of the puppies had Parvo and all needed to be treated.

Then it was time for Animal Care to suit up. Dressed in protective gear from head to toe, KHS professionals went to work, scrubbing every inch of the kennels, even going so far as to remove and sanitize the ceiling tiles. They used paperclips to get into every crevice. Everything smelled of bleach. They literally cleaned every nook and cranny to ensure that the six would stay healthy.

When all were clean and well and spayed and neutered, they were taken in by our amazing foster families to recover and relax while they awaited a new home. And after many, many baths, diligent care, and a lot of love, those puppies - Finley, Kai, Jaedin, Reign, Averylyn, and Morgan - found their families, the last one leaving the shelter on October 28th.

It takes a team effort to give this kind of care. From the moment an animal comes through the KHS doors, to the moment they leave, there's an array of helpers to make sure that they receive the best treatment possible. From Admissions to Vet Services, Foster to Customer Service, volunteers and staff alike, every team member gives their all for the animals.

But they can only give so much because you do.

Please consider celebrating Giving Tuesday on December 3rd by giving to KHS today. Your donation will truly be the gift that keeps on giving.
