Humanitarian Parole for Afghan Nationals Extended

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that beginning this month, Afghan nationals who arrived in the United States following the fall of Kabul in August 2021, will be able to request a re-parole through online and paper filing. Opening Doors welcomes this news as most Afghan evacuees are still awaiting a path to permanent status and are nearing the expiration of their initial parole period.

While this provides a temporary solution, only the passage of the Afghan Adjustment Act (AAA) by congress will provide a more permanent legal pathways to our Afghan neighbors. Fewer than 10% of Afghans resettled in the U.S. have secured permanent legal status for themselves and their families according to DHS.

The passage of the Afghan Adjustment Act remains a top priority for Opening Doors so that our Afghan neighbors have access to more streamlined permanent protection to experience stability, self-sufficiency and belonging.

Join thousands of people across the United States who have called on their members of Congress to support the AAA. Act now!

So Much to Celebrate in June!

Immigrant Heritage Month

Immigrant Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the diversity and shared heritage of immigrants throughout our nation. It is also an opportunity to recognize the courageous journey immigrants make to pursue stability, self-sufficiency, and belonging.

In celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month, we would like to honor their contributions to our communities. They have brought prosperity, rich cultural diversity, and expertise.

World Refugee Day

Every year on June 20, we celebrate the strength and courage of refugees who have been forced to flee their home to escape conflict or persecution.

In commemorating this day, join our volunteer community to extend a warm welcome to our new neighbors.

LGBTQ+ Pride Month

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Pride Month is celebrated every June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Riots, a tipping point in the Gay Liberation Movement.

LGBTQ+ immigrants, refugees, and survivors of trafficking deserve to lead lives of belonging where they are safe and celebrated.

Juneteenth

On June 19 we commemorate the freeing of the remaining African-American slaves in Texas in 1865, three years after the emancipation proclamation. Today, Juneteenth celebrates that historic turning point and was declared a federal holiday in 2021.

My Karmic Path to Opening Doors

Blog by Chris Argyros, Staff Attorney at Opening Doors

When I joined Opening Doors a few months ago as a staff attorney, it felt like a calling. I first came across Opening Doors while I was searching for pro bono legal representation for Lorena and Maria, two young asylum seekers that my partner and I sponsored for a year. I contacted and coaxed over 25 lawyers and organizations in the area. Opening Doors was the only organization that said YES, they could take both cases. I was impressed to find an organization that provides client-centered comprehensive services and walks alongside them on their path to stability, self-sufficiency and belonging. What a relief! Helping Afghan Women Find Self-Sufficiency

Opening Doors’ Refugee Family Child Care Microenterprise Development Program aims to support Afghan women to become more self-sufficient by helping them establish licensed home-based child care businesses.

The program provides culturally and linguistically appropriate training and technical assistance to help Afghan women navigate mainstream child care services. Support with licensing and setting up a child care environment is provided together with financial assistance to cover the cost of the start-up.

Currently the program has 32 clients and our Afghan community along with other members are benefitting from this culturally responsive care for children. It created opportunities for many Afghan women to work while having to care for their own children.

Program Eligibility

  • Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders
