Children’s National Hospital has announced a $6.7 million award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the new Children’s National Research & Innovation Campus (RIC). The funds will help transform a historic building on the former site of Walter Reed Army Medical Center into new research labs.

The NIH construction grant marks the first secured grant funding for Phase II of the campus project, signaling continued momentum for the first-of-its-kind pediatric research and innovation hub.

The campus is an enormous addition to the BioHealth Capital Region, the fourth largest research and biotech cluster in the U.S., with the goal of becoming a top-three hub by 2023. Read more
The University of Delaware’s Spin In program, where businesses in the region connect with faculty and students to find innovative solutions for technical or other business problems, has won a five-year $509,615 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA) to expand its reach and impact. The announcement came from EDA's Alejandra Castillo with U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (DE) at UD’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus. The grant comes through EDA’s University Center Economic Development Program, designed to connect valuable university assets around the nation and government agencies in their regions. UD is one of 25 colleges and universities to receive a total of $2.5 million in grants in the 2021 EDA competition. Read more.
The US Economic Development Administration (EDA) has launched its $1 billion "Build Back Better Regional Challenge" that aims to provide a transformational investment to 20-30 regions across the country that want to revitalize their economies. 

Among the eligible entities that may apply include: a) institutions of higher education or a consortium of institutions of higher education and b) public or private non-profit organizations or associations acting in cooperation with officials of a political subdivision of a State. There are two distinct program phases with key deadlines to note with Phase 2 deadline on March 15, 2022.
Special Aerospace Services (SAS) is the newest company to locate in Cummings Research Park (CRP) following a groundbreaking held earlier this month at its new location on the CRP campus.

SAS says this expansion is part of the company’s strategy to expedite its strategic, tactical, manufacturing, logistics, and R&D activities. It will build a 55,000-square-foot facility called “The Campus” to house federal services, research, and special activities, as well as an engineering and training space, high bay assembly, advanced manufacturing, and research bays.

The Campus will be developed to include two major buildings, with 30 high technology jobs. Read more.
The Houston City Council approved Rice Management Company's (RMC) plan to transforms an abandoned Sears department store and 16 Midtown acres into the Ion District. The plan includes $15.3 million in direct investments and community partnerships, including: tech sector job training and job placement; women and minority tech accelerator and innovation programs; a venture fund administered by a fund manager selected by RMC and City of Houston to invest in minority and women tech ventures; project equity, pre-development capital and/or low-cost financing for affordable housing. The Ion District is anchored by the recently opened 266,000-square-foot innovation hub, the Ion, the epicenter of the 16-acre transformational, mixed-use development. Read more.
The new Research and Innovation Center in The Park at Auburn hosted a "Startup Showcase" last August featuring six Auburn start-ups and had a chance to share their stories with university leadership and key government and business leaders.

“We are grateful to Alabama Power for their role in supporting entrepreneurship at Auburn and for raising awareness for the role universities and university research parks play in contributing to economic development throughout the state and region,” said Cary Chandler, senior director of the Auburn Research and Technology Foundation and New Venture Accelerator mentor. Rosalind Franklin University’s Innovation and Research Park took another step forward on Oct. 14 when the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced a $2 million matching grant that will allow the university to complete buildout of the facility’s industry space. The grant is part of the state’s Wet Lab Capital program, which funds advancements in research and medicine. RFU Executive Vice President for Research Ronald Kaplan, PhD, said the program and the IRP address “an acute shortage of wet lab space” critical for research and development. Read more.

Sutton, SEFA Executive Director and General Counsel (in photo wearing AURP International Conference 2022 tuque) in Fort Lauderdale. At the event, Harvard University won the "2021 SEFA Lab of the Year" award for its Science and Engineering Complex (adjacent to the new Harvard Enterprise Research Campus in Allston, MA). In addition, the Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact at the University of Oregon, designed by Ennead Architects, was recognized. Read more.
