Message from the Dean

Welcome to the 2022-23 academic year! It’s been great to see the campus bustling once again and for our vibrant community to be back in our classrooms, offices and labs.

The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time and this year was especially memorable for me as I participated in my first Convocation at UCI. I want to extend a special welcome to the newest members of the School of Education family as they begin their rewarding journeys here.

Along with our growing community, the School of Education has so much to celebrate. This year marks our 10th anniversary as a school at a time when we’ve recently been named a top 10 school of education and fourth among public schools. This tremendous “Top 10 in 10 years” achievement is a testament to the excellence of our community – from our renowned faculty and their expansive and impactful research, to the dedication and critical expertise of our staff, to the curiosity and innovation of our student and alumni population, and beyond.

As the fall quarter gets underway, I look forward to learning and sharing about the many more accomplishments of our community as we work together to transform the education landscape.

Sincerely,

Frances Contreras

Dean and Professor

Credential Program Retreat

In their annual Credential Program Retreat, instructors and supervisors from the Master of Arts in Teaching + Credential (MAT) and CalTeach programs met to discuss programming news, initiatives, and goals for the upcoming school year. The focus for this year’s retreat was “Humanizing Teacher Education” with the goal of providing candidates with opportunities to be heard, demonstrate their learning and growth, prioritize their mental and physical health, and have a role in influencing the programs’ curriculums. Program leadership hope this conversation around humanizing the curriculum will also help build community and curricular coherence across the program.

Multiple members from the School of Education gave presentations – including Evelyn Young, lecturer and supervisor of student teachers. Young’s presentation looked at what an “ideal co-constructed and authentic student-teacher, mentor-teacher, and supervisor partnership would look like.”

Both the instructors and supervisors will revisit the retreat’s focus in quarterly meetings, sharing related to humanizing the curriculum and the experience of their candidates. Those who participated in this initial meeting expressed an appreciation for the opportunity to connect with others in the program and learn about ways other instructors and supervisors are working to humanize the experience of candidates at the School of Education.
