Dear Marquette Families,
This school year Marquette has started to become a Welcoming School. Our theme this school year is “Embracing All Families.” This means we are focused on honoring and lifting the many diverse families of our Marquette community. Scholars and staff members are sharing and learning about families through lessons, art projects, and class meetings. Our Community Read book this year, The Misadventures of the Family Fletcher, is about a family and their many adventures. As I join classrooms, I hear kids connecting to different events in the book and sharing about their own families.
Families are an important part of success for all our scholars. Last school year, virtual learning brought many challenges and adjustments for us all. It also brought staff and families closer together as we supported our scholars’ learning. We want to keep that partnership and momentum going forward this school year.
On November 4th and 5th, you will have the opportunity to attend family conferences. This is an important time for you to learn about the progress of your child and ask questions about their learning. This is also when families and school staff find ways to come together in support of student learning. We appreciate the willingness of family members to attend conferences and partner with us.
During second quarter, students will continue to share about their families. All scholars will be creating a Family Quilt Square during art class to display at school. Families may also create quilt square at home to send into school for us to display. More detailed information will be send home the week of November 1st in backpack mail.
November is a month that we often express gratitude and thanks. I want to thank you all for the support you provide your child each day. I appreciate you. Please feel free to reach out with any questions, ideas, or appreciations.
Best,
Mrs. Parks

News from Advanced Learning
Kristin Haugen-Wente, Advanced Learner Specialist
All 5th graders have been invited to participate in this year’s Yahara Writers’ Competition! This contest is open to 5-8th graders across Dane County. Students can submit work in 5 different categories; short stories, poetry, editorials, cartoons, and cover art.
A brief informational presentation was given to each classroom, and students had the chance to see examples of past work, ask questions, and hear about all of the rules and guidelines around the competition. In addition, all information has been included in students’ Seesaw classroom.
Thus far, there has been a lot of interest around the competition, and I hope many students will take the opportunity to showcase their writing and/or drawing skills.
Good luck to all, and happy writing!

Outdoor Clothing for Cold Weather
As we experience colder weather please make sure your child has warm enough outdoor clothing. In the winter, we ask that students wear gloves, hats/hoods, snow pants, winter coats, and boots. Feel free to reach out to our Social Worker, Mrs. Markwiese, if your child needs winter clothing.
Before and After School Safety
Arrival Time: Students can arrive from 7:15-7:30 am. Teachers are hoping kids can arrive closer to 7:15 am, especially if they are eating breakfast.
Thornton Avenue: Both Marquette and O’Keeffe scholars and families use Thornton Avenue for arrival.
If you are dropping a scholar off by car, you can drop off in the car drop off area on Jenifer Street. Then you can make a left on Rogers Street to avoid Thornton. There is a traffic signal at Rogers and Willy Street.
If your child is a third grader, you can still drop him or her off in the same car drop off area. They can walk down the Jenifer Street sidewalk to Door 6.
Request from our Crossing Guards:
Remind your children to walk their bikes across the street for safety, especially when the crossing guards are at the intersection.

This includes additional funding towards social worker, school psychologist, educational assistants, and Library Media Specialist.
