America’s Maritime Academies Named
as SCI's 2022 Silver Bell Award Honoree

The Seamen’s Church Institute is pleased and honored to recognize the many important contributions of America’s maritime academies, represented by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the State University of New York Maritime College, Maine Maritime Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, California Maritime Academy, Texas A&M Maritime Academy, and the Great Lakes Maritime Academy. The maritime academies will collectively receive the Silver Bell Award at SCI’s 44th Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner at Pier Sixty in Manhattan on June 9, 2022. We acknowledge their immense contribution to our future maritime industry success. We are honoring these institutions for their unique roles in educating a diverse, talented community of young mariners in the nautical sciences, marine and systems engineering, and supply chain and intermodal logistics. Instilled with a sense of integrity, character, honor, and good citizenship, these women and men are the next great leaders of our nation.

Our maritime academies advance the values of our maritime culture and heritage, and are critical to our health as a nation. Importantly, they contribute powerfully to international trade, global stability, and maritime security. The future graduates of America’s maritime academies will write the future of our world.
The academies have played historic roles in our nation’s commerce, defense, and economic vitality. Today’s students, and those to come, will find an educational environment critical to meet the challenges of the global infrastructure and logistics evolution facing North America and the world. They will also provide the technical innovation and engineering excellence needed for the coming energy transition.
The academies have, and will continue to have, a positive impact, empowering diversity, recruiting, educating, and graduating the vital talent essential to ensure the world’s supply chains operate efficiently. These institutions also ensure that our ships, inland rivers and waterways, ports, and coastlines are always in the best hands, and that new industries, such as offshore wind, are built out safely and effectively.

Academy graduates already oversee energy and industrial plants, hospitals, and facilities, and tomorrow will be part of the backbone of the great evolving industrial systems of the future.

The new generation of training ships, the continual investment in the quality and diversity of campus life, for all this and more, SCI is pleased to award its Silver Bell to each of America’s maritime academies at our 44th Annual Silver Bell Awards Dinner. We salute the professors, staff, and administrations of the maritime academies, and proudly recognize every student who brings with them each day the ambition, intellect, and determination to be the best for each other and the future.
