Farewell to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI

Homily

Pope Francis this morning celebrated the Requiem Mass for his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. In his homily, Pope Francis commends Benedict into the loving hands of God the Father, and prays that his joy may now be complete as he contemplates the Lord face to face.

"God’s faithful people, gathered here, now accompanies and entrusts to him the life of the one who was their pastor. Like the women at the tomb, we too have come with the fragrance of gratitude and the balm of hope, in order to show him once more the love that is undying. We want to do this with the same wisdom, tenderness and devotion that he bestowed upon us over the years. Together, we want to say: 'Father, into your hands we commend his spirit'.

Benedict, faithful friend of the Bridegroom, may your joy be complete as you hear his voice, now and forever!"

Prayer for the Repose of Benedict

Earlier this week, the Vatican published a Prayer for the Soul of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. See the posting, or read the text of the prayer on our website.

A Listening Heart

As we lift our own hearts in gratitude for the gift of this great teacher, many remember the three-volume work, Jesus of Nazareth, written by then Pope Benedict. “This book is . . . my personal search ‘for the face of the Lord.’"

At St. Matthew's we presented a reading by a parishioner of the entire first volume (published in 2007), which covers the period from the Baptism of the Lord to the Transfiguration. The second covers Holy Week through the Resurrection, and the third is subtitled "The Infancy Narratives."

Among the riches, he leaves this food for our prayer life: "The Kingdom of God comes by way of a listening heart. That is its path. And that is what we must pray for again and again." (Jesus of Nazareth, Vol. I, p. 146)

May Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI rest in peace.

Join us for Mass for the Epiphany of the Lord, and prepare by reading this week's Mystical Word reflection by L.J. Milone. He writes, "We can get to the heart of the feast of Epiphany through the conversion of St. Paul. The heart of this feast has to do with the authority of our inner experience." Cardinal Gregory celebrates the 11am Mass on Sunday, January 1. All Masses are open to the public. See St. Matthew's Covid-19 protocols.
