THIS WEEK'S HIGHLIGHT

New students and a new school year

The William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications welcomed new students Sunday, Aug. 21, during the Academic Welcome event. Students had a chance to meet fellow J-School students, faculty and staff, talk with representatives from various school organizations, and tour Stauffer-Flint Hall. Students also enjoyed snacks, games and received J-School branded gear. Students who have questions about the school can check the J-School website or email jadvising@ku.edu.

RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS

Professor Hyunjin Seo’s National Science Foundation-funded project offering technology education for marginalized women has been selected as one of four finalists for the University Economic Development Association’s 2022 Awards of Excellence in the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion category. Her interdisciplinary team is invited to give a presentation at this year’s UEDA Summit in October where the winner in each category will be announced.

The research article "Knowledge overconfidence is associated with anti-consensus views on controversial scientific issues," co-authored by Associate Professor Mugur Geana and colleagues from Portland State University, the University of Colorado-Boulder and Brown University, was published in the July 2022 issue of Science Advances journal. The article has generated significant discussion in both national and international news media and on social media. Altmetrics, a site that tracts the impact of research articles in the scientific community and with the public, ranked the study in the top 5 percent of all research outputs ever tracked by the site (over 21.5 million studies). The study is available here.

Professor Peter Bobkowski is completing a Fulbright Specialist project titled, “Disentangling Disinformation in Social Media” at Laurea University of Applied Sciences in Finland. Over the two-week visit, Bobkowski will assist colleagues with a grant-funded research project and lead workshops for graduate students about identifying and combating the spread of misinformation and disinformation.

Professor Yvonnes Chen along with her collaborators presented a panel on Aug. 17 from the NIH funded RADx-UP project at the 2022 National Conference on Health Communication, Marketing and Media hosted by the Centers for Disease Control. This panel was titled "Addressing COVID-19 Disparities through Community-Engaged, Evidence-Based Health Communication Campaign in the state of Kansas." It was one of the 17 panels competitively selected by the CDC. Her fellow panelists included Dr. Crystal Lumpkins, associate professor at the University of Utah; Mariana Ramirez, director of JUNTOS Center for Advancing Latino Health at the KU Medical Center; and Rev. Tony Carter, senior pastor at Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Wyandotte County.

Faculty and graduate students from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications presented their research studies and creative projects Aug. 3-6 at the 105th annual conference of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) in Detroit. See the list here.
