Neil Swidey - Trapped Under the Sea

The Nevins Memorial Library and the Parker Memorial Library in Dracut are pleased to co-sponsor an exciting author event in March. Acclaimed Boston Globe reporter and author Neil Swidey will appear March 26 at 7pm at the Nevins library in Methuen for a discussion about his latest book, Trapped Under the Sea. This book, which has recently been released in paperback, is the gripping story of the final stages of the Deer Island Tunnel water treatment plant project and the deadly task tackled bravely by those men called "sandhogs". Neil weaves an intriguing web of human interest with policy and politics. This book has garnered many awards, among them Amazon's Best Books of 2014 and Booklist's Editor's Choice of 2014. Neil's first book, The Assist, was a Boston Globe bestseller and he also co-wrote the New York Times bestselling Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy. This program is free of charge and there will be books available for purchase. Please contact the Reference desk for more information about this program by calling 978 686-4080 x13.

Digitization happening here at the library
Nevins Digital Collection

The Nevins Library now has over 1,000 items digitized and online thanks to our collaboration with the Boston Public Library and The Digital Commonwealth. Hundreds of postcards have been added to our   earlier collection of Methuen High yearbooks. The postcard collection was compiled by the late Walter "Red" Winn and was generously shared  by his widow and Head of Technical Services at the library, Beverly Winn. The postcards fall into two areas: a collection of pictures of  libraries from all across Massachusetts and a collection of postcards showing Methuen and Greater Lawrence sites. Additionally a number of other important historical items were loaned by the Methuen Historical Commission for digitization and sharing on the web.  These include photographs and ephemera relating to Methuen, and also the significant "Stephen Barker Map" hand-drawn in 1806.  All of these items are on-line and searchable on the web.  You can find a link to the digital collection on our website, or go directly to the link below to start your searching.  The Library is continuing to cooperate with the Boston Public Library, the Digital Commonwealth and local groups and collectors to continue to expand on-line access to historical material about our city.

Local Author - F.H.Belfus-Bennett - Saturaday Night Dead

On Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 1:00pm, local author F. H. Belfus-Bennett will visit the Library to sign and talk about her debut novel, Saturday Night Dead, a murder mystery set in Boston's 1990s rock n' roll scene. When wealthy, privileged college students who frequent the underground music scene begin turning up dead, it leaves the entire city in a panic. With eerie messages left by the killer at each scene, the clues pile up and questions begin to rise: Is A.J. Fuller, the Southern gentleman drug dealer, also a cold-blooded killer? What is the true identity of his sidekick, "Pisces" Petrovic? And what does David, a waiter and Jim Morrison look-alike, have to do with it all?
