Week 2: Affability

St. Angela Merici

Hello Ladies! Generally, we think of affability meaning friendliness or being good-natured. Aren't we already doing that? Well, yes, but how often are we stingy or particular about our affability? Do we fail to give particular people the benefit of the doubt? How often do we limit our friendships to those who are just like us?

It can be hard to share our friendliness with someone who doesn't "click" with us well, but that's what we're called to do. We need to care for the souls of everyone we encounter, including those who might not be easy to love. It's only something that can be cultivated through our own lives being full, especially through prayer. Let's ask God to show us how best to love those around us, and to give us the patience, peace, and affability to do it well.

Resources To Go Deeper

Some of our "Go Deeper" resources use FORMED, a subscription platform for all kinds of Catholic media. We make FORMED available for free to all of our parishioners! If you don't already have an account, you may need to create one to view some of these resources. Go to Formed.org, click "sign up as a parishioner" and search for us in the "Find your Parish" search bar.

Affability

FORMED - What is Authentic Friendship? from The Search Continues by Chris Stephanik (7:57)

FORMED - "How to Foster Meaningful Friendship" from Rachel Balducci (9:40)

YouTube - "Friendship: Classical, Medieval, Modern" by Prof. Jennifer Frey, hosted by The Thomistic Institute. While this audio-only podcast video doesn't focus on affability specifically, this is a great introduction and overview of friendship from a philosophical perspective, based on Aristotle and St. Thomas Aquinas. Virtue Tree from Open Light Media - Check out this interactive virtue "tree" from the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist. They great resources for understanding how the virtues all fit together, and explaining them in simple terms (they're teachers, after all!) While it's primary meant for students, I find it incredibly helpful for my own understanding of virtue. The Virtue Tree is part of their free content.

Note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church is one of the best and most beautiful reference books summarizing what Catholics believe. Catechism references are by paragraph number, not page number. Keep that in mind when you're trying to look up our "Catechism References to Ponder"!
