Award-winning author Susan Fletcher will discuss her latest book A BEAR WITHOUT A HOME, the story of a polar bear gifted to King Henry III of England by the King of Norway. This non-fiction picture book is inspired by her 2018 historical middle grade novel JOURNEY OF THE PALE BEAR which received a starred review from Kirkus and was an SCBWI Golden Kite Award honor book. Susan will discuss her unique journey between the two genres as well as provide insight into her writing process and sign copies of her books.

We are working on having copies on sale during the meeting but you can pre-purchase them through Bookshop.org (links below to support our local independent bookstore) or your store of choice:

October 22nd: Their Voice, Their Story: Getting to the Heart of Our Characters with Author Leah Henderson

Don't miss this exciting, full day, in-person event as we work on voice and getting to the heart of our characters! Character and voice go hand in hand. When we understand the delicate dance between them, we are able to craft unique characters and undeniable voice. But often as writers we wonder what comes first, a memorable character or a distinct voice?

Through a series of exercises, discussions, and examples—with a special focus on rhythm, life experience, and word choice—we will explore why it is vital to delve deep into our character’s world in order to get at the heart of their voice and their story. This is the perfect workshop for writers who want to go beyond the surface of story to more fully engage their readers and create unique and unforgettable characters.

Member tickets: $60
