Next Board Meeting: August 25
The San Mateo Union High School District Board of Trustees will meet in person on August 25 (members of the public may also continue to attend the meetings via Zoom). 

The Closed Session portion of the board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Open Session will begin at 7 p.m.

Students Can Earn College Credit While in High School

SMUHSD is offering two free dual enrollment course this Fall! Both classes will be held at Mills High School and are open to any student in the District.

Classes run Wednesdays, September 21 - December 14, 6 - 9 p.m. 

Classes run Thursdays, September 22 - December 15, 6 - 9 p.m.

If your student is interested and has more questions, have them contact their school counselor.
SMUHSD and San Mateo High School to Celebrate 120th Anniversary 

Save the Date!

The San Mateo Union High School District and San Mateo High School turn 120 on September 15! Please join us at an open house event at San Mateo High to celebrate this milestone on October 8 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include tours of the school, performances by student groups and more. We hope to see you there!

Complimentary Meals for all SMUHSD Students

During the 2022-2023 school year, the state of California is providing one complimentary breakfast meal and one complimentary lunch meal daily to ALL San Mateo Union High School District students.

Breakfast is served before school or at brunch, and lunch is served daily.

District Increases Pay Rate for Substitute Teachers

Work for a District that understands and appreciates the vital role substitute teachers play in the continuity of daily education for our students. On June 9, the SMUHSD board approved a pay rate increase for our high school substitute teachers.

Highlights
  • Pay rate starting July 1, 2022:
  • Four or more periods/hours: $250 per day
  • One to three periods: $50 per period/hour
  • Supplement your income.
  • Create your own schedule.

Hillsdale High's Frankie Corbett Continues to Climb International Badminton Ranks

Hillsdale High School's Francesca "Frankie" Corbett has been competing in the BWF World Championships in Tokyo August 17 - 25. 

Francesca and her badminton partner have had a busy summer. Their World Ranking for Women’s Doubles has gone from 128 in early spring to 79 today.

Students Invited to Apply for Youth Climate Ambassadors Leadership Program

Applications are now open for a yearlong leadership program for high school students in San Mateo County who are interested in learning about climate change and motivated to take action within their schools and community.

The Youth Climate Ambassadors (YCA) Program is offered by San Mateo County’s Office of Sustainability, in partnership with the Citizens Environmental Council of Burlingame, which piloted the project in 2018; the county’s Office of Education; and Peninsula Clean Energy. Students in the 9th through 12th grades are eligible. The deadline for applications is Monday, September 5.

The program is offered from October 2022 through May 2023, with twice-a-month Thursday meetings on Zoom and three in-person retreats on Saturdays. Students will build their knowledge of climate change, explore various climate solutions and develop a final project to create positive environmental change in their school or local community. The Youth Climate Ambassadors will receive a stipend of up to $500, and additional funds will be available for students living in households with limited financial resources. Students who are part of the program can also apply for funding of up to $500 for their final project.

Suicide & Crisis Lifeline Launches 988

As of July 16, 2022, 988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. 

When people call, text, or chat 988, they will be connected to trained counselors that are part of the existing Lifeline network. These trained counselors will listen, understand how their problems are affecting them, provide support, and connect them to resources if necessary.

Most local calls to the National 988 lifeline with the 650-area code are forwarded to the San Mateo-based StarVista Crisis Center.

The last day to register to vote for the November 8, 2022, General Election is October 24, 2022.

All California active registered voters will receive a vote-by-mail ballot for the November 8, General Election.

Your county elections office will begin mailing ballots by October 10, 2022.
