November 2024 E-Newsletter

Depiction of Pruristac, a Ramaytush Ohlone village in what is now Pacifica, by Amy Hosa & Linda Yamane, 2019.

Native American Heritage Month

As we celebrate National Native American Heritage Month, this month's newsletter honors the rich history and enduring legacy of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and highlights our local Ohlone community.

For thousands of years, the Ohlone people have called the Bay Area and Alameda County home. Once known by names such as Tamien, Chochenyo, Matalan, Sagan, and others, the descendants of these tribes today identify as "Ohlone"—a name that honors the tribe that held out from European influence the longest. The living members of the Ohlone tribe continue to preserve and pass down their ancestors' cultural arts, practices, and wisdom, ensuring that this vibrant heritage is carried forward for generations to come.
