Salvation Army Update: Outlying

Areas Get New Assistance

The Salvation Army has begun mobile food distributions to outlying areas where people have difficulty in getting to town to pick up food and get assistance.

Eight boxes of food, packed by Lake 4H, will be taken to Ravendale this Friday, in the Salvation Army’s first attempt to reach the area. Last month the SA made deliveries to Eagle Lake for the first time.

Lassen County Supervisor Jason Ingram will be at the Ravendale distribution to help support the program.

“The Salvation Army is also gearing up for the Holiday Season,” says Susanville Salvation Army Coordinator Carla McDonald. “The kettles will be out next Monday, November 18th. We need volunteers to staff the kettles and help with our biggest fund-raising event of the year.”

If you would like to help you can contact Tina Hemphill, at 1.530.249.0954, to schedule a day and time to volunteer.

Angel Tree tags are already out and ready to be adopted. The tags can be found at Plumas Bank, Golden 1, Anytime Fitness, Walmart and Margie’s Book Nook. Margie’s has all of the book tags. Watch for more locations to be added after Thanksgiving.

“We tried to give everyone a few extra shopping days this year by getting the tags out early,” explains McDonald.

Along with bell ringing and the Angel Tree, the Salvation Army also has two big events coming up – the Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot, where proceeds will be donated to the Salvation Army, the Motorheads Toy Drive this Saturday.

This Saturday’s Toy Drive will be held at Carlson’s, on Riverside Drive, at 8:00a.m. People are asked to adopt a tag from one of the Angel Trees and bring the gift and tag to the car show. The Salvation Army van will be stuffed with these gifts.

The Lassen Grizzlies take on the Westwood Lumberjacks at Arnold Field in 1944 Photo Courtesy Lassen Historical Society

Westwood Evens Susanville Series

November 13, 1942

The Westwood Lumberjacks defeated the Lassen Union High School Grizzlies Armistice Day, on the Westwood field, to the tune of 13 to 6.

With the game an annual feature of the Armistice Day celebration, the Lumberjacks outplayed the Susanville squad to turn in an impressive performance for the final game of the season.

Smashing through the hitherto impregnable center of the Lassen line, the Westwood boys drove to pay dirt once in the first quarter and again n the third, with a drop-kick accounting for the extra digit.

First Lumberjack counter came after a long pass placed them in scoring territory and two successive line drives put them over. The second score was the result of a recovered fumble on the Lassen 20 with hard thrusts at the line carrying them into pay dirt.
