7 Ways to Attract and Hire a Diverse Staff

Healthcare organizations have a responsibility to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by addressing patient cultural diversity, tackling systemic inequity, and building systems whose outcomes advance health equity. And, as house call practices provide care to populations diverse in socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, language, disabilities, and/or gender, it is important that their providers and staff reflect the populations they serve.

“Patients, families, and caregivers are often steeped in a certain culture or environment, and they don’t always feel comfortable communicating their needs to someone who doesn’t acknowledge their diverse values, beliefs, and behaviors,” said Dana Crosby, Senior Director, Engagement and Practice Development at HCCI. “This can prevent them from receiving the best care. In addition to meeting their clinical goals of care, we must meet the patient’s social and cultural needs.”

For providers to give patients holistic care—not just focusing on the physical—they must strive to approach healthcare without conscious or unconscious bias. “To do that best,” Crosby said, “we encourage practices to have a diverse staff, that includes everyone from those providing care, to those answering phones, to those scheduling appointments.”

Crosby’s seven tips for attracting and hiring a diverse staff:

  • Produce a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) mission statement and strategic plan.
  • Commit to embedding DEI strategies in all that you do. Make it part of your practice’s culture.
  • Attract talent with branding. For example, use diverse images on your practice’s career page, website, and social media accounts.
  • Create job profiles that delineate between “requirements” vs. “nice to have” attributes, do not use corporate jargon, and include a DEI mission statement.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with diverse community associations, organizations, and career centers, including academic institutions.
  • Use standardized and unbiased questions in the interview process.
  • Conduct DEI training during onboarding. Then continue this training on an annual basis for all employees.
