Staff Spotlight
Lisa Markus, Nutrition Program Supervisor
Lisa started with Senior Services in August of 2003. Before joining Broomfield Senior Services, she was the Sous Chef at Project Angel Heart, a non-profit in Denver. She oversaw anywhere from 200-400 volunteers each week, and they cooked and packaged 400 meals per day for delivery. One thing she sees changing about Senior Services is the continued and significant increase in nutrition program numbers. In 2003, 13,008 meals were delivered, and in 2021, 35,626 were delivered! When she isn't working, she enjoys spending time with her spouse and fur babies, camping, riding her motorcycle, reading, coking, gardening, and spending time on her land in New Mexico.

Fun Facts about Lisa:
  • Her very first job was teaching percussion in high school. She also taught the percussion section for the junior high marching band, and taught younger students privately.
  • Her favorite food is Mexican food, though Indian/Thai/Asian cuisine is her go-to for special meals.
  • Lisa loves boxing and was in a female boxing group at the 20th St Gym in downtown Denver for 8 years.
  • She has a love for donkeys and has volunteered at a donkey shelter for over five years, and still sponsors one of the donkeys.
  • Lisa has always wanted to own her own vegan Mexican restaurant, to own a book/comic bookstore with a small breakfast/lunch/bar counter in it.
  • She has been all over Europe, but hands down her favorite place she has visited is Japan.
A Great Recipe for March: Irish Soda Bread Muffins (made each year for St Patrick's Day lunch at Lakeshore Cafe!)
~makes 12 muffins
5 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 TBSP baking powder
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes, room temperature
2 1/2 cups regular or golden raisins (or dried currants
3 TBSP caraway seeds
2 1/2 cups buttermilk
1 large egg
'sugar in the raw" for sprinkling
Step 1~
Preheat oven to 350*F. Lightly spray muffin pan and spray muffin cups. Whisk first 5 ingredients in a bowl to blend. Add butter, using fingertips, rub in until coarse crumbs form. Stir in raisins and caraway seeds. Whisk buttermilk and egg in another bowl to blend, then add to the flour mixture using a wooden spoon, stir just until well incorporated (mixture will be very sticky).
Step 2~
Transfer mixture into sprayed muffin cups; fill 3/4 of the muffin cup. Sprinkle tops generously with raw sugar. Bake until muffins are cooked through and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 20 minutes. When cool enough to touch, remove muffins onto a rack and cool completely. (Can be made 1 day ahead. Wrap tightly in saran wrap or put into Tupperware; store at room temperature).
Serve as is, with butter, jam, or whatever else sounds delicious!

Check-in at Recreation Facilities:
Recreation Services puts safety first by checking in all visitors to facilities. It is important to know who is in the building at any given time. Please allow for a little extra time for check-in when attending the Recreation Centers as a spectator of programs, activities, or dropping in.
Facility users and spectators can speed up the check-in process by scanning a key fob. Don't have one? Stop by the PDRC or BCC front desk and a clerk can assist.
