PRINCIPAL'S DESK

September 29, 2022

Hello Tiger Students and Families,

It’s Homecoming Week, and our students and staff have been having such a memorable week filled with dress up days, live music played at lunch by student bands, treats provided by our Nutrition Services team, and games and activities for all to enjoy during lunchtime. Our students have done an amazing job of coming together and building a stronger LC community while showing their character and commitment to assuring that our school is a special place for all students.

I hope you, as parents, guardians, and family members, were able to join us for our Homecoming football game last night at Union Stadium. There were opportunities for families and friends to connect before the game and enjoy a meal and purchase LC gear to showcase your LC pride and spirit while helping support LC students with your purchases. On the field, our football team prevailed 12-10 showing toughness and the ability to stay together as a team. Our cheerleaders and drill team performed remarkably and displayed precision and spirit. In the stands, our students and families were instrumental in helping us keep the energy going.

What a fun week is has been! Looking forward to many more to come.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mr. Corley

Principal

Connect with Principal Corley

I would like to invite parents/guardians to join me for a new LC Parent Advisory Group.

We will meet the 4th Monday of each month (next meeting October 24) from 6:00-7:00pm in the LC Commons. I hope to see your there!

UPDATES

Homecoming Dance

The Homecoming Dance (the theme this year is "Under the L Sea") is Friday, September 30 from 8:00-11:00pm in the LC Commons.

  • All non-LC guests must have been pre-approved by Mr. Dang. If they have not been approved, they will not be able to attend the dance.
  • No entry after 9:00pm and once students are in the dance, if they leave they cannot return to the dance.
  • All attendees must bring a picture ID (school or state) and the dance ticket.
  • There is no coat check room, so please do not bring anything you can't put in a pocket or carry. LC is not responsible for lost/stolen items.
  • Do not leave any items visible in your car while parking at LC under the freeway. Students may park in Lot 1 (across from the Commons) and Lot 2 (in front of the Main Building) for the dance.
  • All school rules, policies, and expectations apply at the dance.

PSAT Day for Juniors

On Wednesday, October 12, all Juniors will be taking the PSAT. All other grades will follow a regular Wednesday bell schedule, although some classes on the 3rd floor will take place in rooms different from where they normally are (the affected teachers will inform student about the changes the days before the test).

Juniors will report to their assigned room by 7:50am. We are encouraging Juniors to get a good night’s sleep the night before, eat a good breakfast the day of, and remember to bring pencils, water, a snack, and a calculator if you have one to bring (we have a limited supply). Room assignments and movements will be clearly posted and communicated to students at school. Juniors will attend Lunch, 5th, and 6th period after the test.

Running Start Juniors are all pre-registered to take the PSAT, if it works with your college schedule (there is no alternate time/day for this exam). NewTech Juniors will also stay at LC and take the PSAT.

Why the PSAT/NMSQT Is Important? When you take the PSAT/NMSQT, you open the door to more benefits than you might think:

  • It connects students to more than $300 million in scholarships, including the National Merit Scholarship Program.
  • It's excellent practice for the SAT. Both tests measure the same knowledge and skills and ask the same types of questions, so PSAT/NMSQT takers will know what to expect on the SAT.
  • It's the first step to a free, personalized SAT study plan. Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy uses your PSAT/NMSQT score to create a customized SAT study plan with sample questions that focus on areas where they need help.
  • You will receive detailed feedback on your score to identify areas of strength and growth.
  • In Spokane Public Schools, your PSAT score may be used to help recover English 9/10 and Algebra/Geometry credits you may be deficient in earning.

AP Exam Registration Starts October 1

The AP Test Registration window is October 1 - October 31. Students enrolled in AP classes have the option of taking AP Exams in May. These are optional exams, but students in the classes are highly encouraged to take the exams to earn college credit and/or college course placement.

The fee for EACH AP exam is $97 ($145 for AP Seminar). Students who qualify for free/reduced lunch can get a fee waiver from Mrs. Meyer.

Step 1Go on to your AP College Board account and select YES or NO for every AP class that you are enrolled in this year to commit to taking or not taking each exam.

  • THIS STEP IS REQUIRED, EVEN IF YOU AREN’T TAKING THE EXAM.
  • The College Board system defaults you to YES, so it is important for you to change it if you aren't taking the exam.
  • If you haven't entered the Join Codes for your AP classes, talk to your teacher ASAP!

Step 2Determine your method of payment:

  • I will pay the full amount for my exams AND I will be paying with cash or check. Bring payment to the Business Office. If you need to pay over time, discuss a plan with the Business Office. Bring completed AP Exam Registration form (yellow sheet) and mark every test you plan to take.

  • I will pay the full amount for my exams AND I will be paying online with a credit card. Go to wa-spokane.intouchreceipting.com or www.lctigers.com (click on Pay Fees), follow the directions, and pay. You do NOT need to complete the AP Exam registration form (yellow sheet).

  • I qualify for free/reduced lunch or state assistance for $0 exams. See Mrs. Meyer in the Public Office to get the fee waiver form and discuss options. Take the fee waiver form home for parent signature. Return fee waiver form and AP Exam Registration form (yellow sheet) to the Business Office.

If you do not order before October 31, there is a $45 late registration fee per exam! Questions? Email Theresa Meyer

Isaac's Bookshelf

Isaac's Bookshelf is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization that was created in memory of LC teacher Mrs. Brincken's son, Isaac, to share the joy of reading with children in the hospital. Isaac passed away at five months of age due to complications with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome and CHARGE Syndrome. Among all of Isaac's favorite activities, including playing his foot piano, holding hands, nibbling on his fingers, and snuggling, Isaac's absolute favorite pastime was reading. Isaac's two favorite books were Rex Wrecks It and Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons.

Isaac has three bookshelves at Sacred Heart Children's Hospital, one in the Pediatric ICU, one in the Neonatal ICU, and one on the Inpatient Pediatric Floor. The bookshelves bring joy to families and also serve as an exciting destination for patients who are working on improving mobility after surgery. Every patient has the opportunity to pick a book from Isaac's Bookshelf to read in the hospital and then take home.

Join us on Saturday, September 31 from 12:00-4:00pm at Auntie's Bookstore for the 2nd Annual Isaac's Books and Blood Drive to help refill the shelves and donate blood.

Picture Retake Day

Picture retake day is scheduled for Tuesday, October 18. Students who were absent or would like a new picture can come to the Auditorium before school up through lunch time to get a new picture. You can still order pictures from our picture day last week here.

Booster Club Updates

Booster Auction: We are diligently working on our auction. As a reminder, coaches/advisors/parents, we ask each club and team to put together a basket to be auctioned off at the event. Our representative will be in contact with you to confirm the theme of your basket. These are typically in the $200-$300 value range, but larger teams are more than welcome to do a larger item for our live auction or several baskets. While we have a great core group working on the event, we still need help with the auction committee and at the venue on November 5. We are working on item procurement, ticket sales, decor, food and beverage, advertising, communications, etc. Please join us if you are able to help make this a successful event!

  • Booster Club Auction Meeting will be held on Monday, October 3 at 7:00pm Pike's house, please text 509 475-3475 for the address.
  • Our next Booster Club meeting will be held October 10th at 6:30pm in the LC Commons. This is an allocations meeting, so come join us, learn how you can get involved and see our Booster dollars at work!
  • The LC Booster Club will be hosting our "annual" dinner and auction on November 5, starting at 5:30pm. We still need volunteers on the planning committee and a little help on the night of the event. Please contact Darin Pike at 509 475-3475 if you have some time available. Otherwise, please buy your tickets via the link at the top of our webpage lcboosters.org.
