We have an exciting new initiative to roll out to all businesses and nonprofits in the Elk Rapids region!  We are introducing the inaugural 4 Under 40 program as a collaborative effort between DERA and the Chamber of Commerce.  We are looking for the nomination of individuals under 40 who are making their mark on the region (Village, Milton Township, Elk Rapids Township) through leadership, economic impact, and community service.

New Career Series Offers Help for Anyone

Beginning or Changing a Career


TRAVERSE CITY, MI— Anyone who is looking to begin or change a career but doesn't know where to start can find help through a new Career Series presented by Northwest Michigan Works! and Northwestern Michigan College Extended Education. The Career Series will include one class per week on Tuesday evenings from September 13 through October 11. All classes will run from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Northwest Michigan Works!, 1209 S. Garfield Ave in Traverse City. The classes are free and participants can sign up for any or all of them.

 

The first class, on September 13, will be Find Your Skills & Strengths. It will provide online and written tools for self-assessment and discovery. Participants will also explore occupations and education that leads to different careers.

 

The dates and topics for the other classes will be:

        September 20, Career Exploration, Design Your Life, and Informational Interviewing

         September 27, How to Search for Jobs

         October 4, Resume & Cover Letter Assistance 

         October 11, Meet & Greet Northwest Michigan Works! staff and NMC educational staff.

Building a Recovery-Friendly Workplace Event

October 11 in Traverse City


TRAVERSE CITY, MI—The ongoing opioid epidemic in the U.S. is making it important for businesses to understand how they can attract and retain talent by creating a recovery-friendly workplace. Resources to help businesses do that will be featured at "Building a Recovery-Friendly Workplace" on October 11 in Traverse City. The event will run from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, in the Conference Center at Northwest Michigan Works!, 1209 S. Garfield Avenue.

 

The event will include information about HR compliance strategies, including the Americans with Disabilities Act; the stigma associated with recovery; and strategies to build a recovery-friendly workplace.

There will also be a panel discussion featuring:

·        Timothy Hudson with the Michigan Opioid Collaborative

·         Lindsay Raymond, Employment Law Attorney, Danbrook Adams Raymond PLC

·         Caitlin Koucky, Executive Director, Community Recovery Alliance

 

There is no charge to attend the event and lunch will be provided. Seating is limited. Registration is available at nwm.org/Recovery. Another "Building a Recovery-Friendly Workplace" event will be held on October 18 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at Northwest Michigan Works! In Cadillac.

The film will be accompanied by Andrew Rogers on our ‘Mighty’Wurlitzer theater organ. Rogers, a Detroit native, is an organist at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor. He also scores and performs silent films, and performs concerts throughout the U.S. and Internationally.

Owl Prowl 

Friday, October 14, 2022 - 7:00pm (1.5 hrs), $10 per person, must pre-register 

Join us as we learn about our local owls and their conservation with an introductory presentation, and then head out for a night hike in search of these amazing birds. Participants should be comfortable walking outdoors at night for about 1 mile on uneven trails. Bring a light. $10 per person. Must pre-register. No walk-in spaces are available.


Make Your Own Walking Stick

Sunday, October 16, 2022 - 1pm (1.5 hrs), $10 per participant

Walking sticks come in handy for walkers and hikers.  They provide support on a rocky trail and help you maintain good posture as you walk along.   This class will guide you in stick selection and preparation.  We will furnish materials and give you some ideas on customizing your own special walking stick.

Paddle Antrim Grant Program Funds Projects that Protect Northern Michigan Waterways



Paddle Antrim is pleased to announce they are accepting applications for their bi-annual 2022 Ripple Effect Mini Grant Program. This competitive grant program funds projects that protect the waterways and connect people to them. Potential projects must focus on stewardship, education, or increasing accessibility to the lakes and rivers.

 

Since 2015, Paddle Antrim has awarded over $25,000 to 17 projects that have made an impact on over 10 communities. The Ripple Effect Mini Grant Program is funded from income earned through Paddle Antrim events such as the Paddle Antrim Festival and kayaking safety classes. To be considered for the grant program, projects must be focused on the Elk River Chain of Lakes watershed or adjacent watersheds which impact Antrim County. Eligible applicants include Michigan-based non-profit organizations or governmental entities.
