Note from Rev. Ruth

The first snow I remember in Birmingham was when I was 8. I was SO excited, and the very first thing I did, even before breakfast, was throw on my coat over my PJs and run out to the alley behind our house where I lay down and made my very first snow angel! For a southern girl who had only read about snow and watched it on TV, it was a kind of right of passage.

Now it's inconvenient, requires extra effort for preparation, and leaves me stuck at home for days. I won't even get into the Blizzard of '93, which phrase always makes me sound like an old geezer!

Snow and severe cold events do remind me that there is some joy to be gleaned from inconvenience and extra effort. I just have to be attentive and look for it. In these difficult times, I may have to look very hard, but I believe it's there!

In hope,

Rev. Ruth

I wish you all a glimpse of hidden joy this week!

This Week in CYRE

This month’s theme is The Practice of Story. In this session, we close out our theme of story by exploring our faith tradition’s story of being people of love. We will show how liberating love has been a central part of our story from the beginning of our faith to today.

Congratulations to the Recent Graduates of the Senior High OWL program at UUCH!

OWL stands for Our Whole Lives, and is a lifespan, comprehensive sexuality education program with curriculum from the UUA and UCC traditions. The OWL classroom is a safe space for students to ask questions, have frank discussions, and consider reliable sources for information moving forward.

Some of the topics covered were sexual health, navigating relationships, negotiating boundaries, discussing the ways consent is given and interpreted, plus considering how those things may evolve as we grow up.

Each student received a certificate during the Sunday Service on January 19. The participants were:

Louis Johnson

Vane Warrington

Jeremy White

William Yang

Torin Kyemba

We empower each of you to go into your peer groups and speak up when you hear incorrect information; unpack myths and misunderstandings among your contacts; raise awareness and affirm the legitimacy of LGBTQ+ relationships and the spectrum of gender expressions; advocate for gender equality and reproductive rights; and quell shame. You have the power to call out derogatory terms and set an example for the importance of understanding human sexuality.

Congratulations to these new community leaders!

Note from Your Hospitality Team

In the very near future, you may notice some changes during our Coffee Hours and Potlucks, as well as differences in the Fellowship Hall itself, for these events. It has become evident that it is no longer feasible to maintain a Hospitality Committee large enough to effectively carry out all the duties and responsibilities inherent to our growing and vibrant congregation. We celebrate with pride and gratitude that during the past year it has been necessary to add six more dining tables in the Fellowship Hall in order to accommodate the increased participation.

Hospitality has three major responsibilitie: the monthly Potluck, the weekly after-service Coffee Hour, and Special Events (celebrations, receptions, memorial services, all-church events, and co-sponsoring food events with other committees). We are developing a protocol which will give everyone the opportunity to volunteer for one-time specific tasks within these three areas without becoming a "committee member."

So look for the sign-up chart in the Fellowship Hall and become a player on the greater volunteer support team which helps make UUCH such a strong, thriving congregation!

New UU Class Continues this Sunday (1/26/25) at 9 am

UUSC's Guest At Your Table

UUCH is wrapping up our participation in the annual Guest At Your Table (GAYT) program sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). The GAYT program has introduced generations of Unitarian Universalists to grassroots partners working for justice around the world with our support. This church year, we are celebrating Guest at Your Table’s 50th anniversary with the theme “Expanding the Welcome Table.”

Now that we have hosted our “guests,” it is time to return our boxes and donations to the UUSC. You can do this in one of 3 ways:

  1. Return your box to UUCH. There is a table/basket in the Fellowship Hall in which to return your box. Make sure to fill out the label on the side of the box so you get credit for your contribution.
  2. Make an on-line donation to UUSC at uusc.org/givetoguest
  3. Mail a check directly to UUSC at:

Habitat for Humanity Home Build

UUCH members and volunteers from other churches are making good progress at the Fazzingo/Turner house at 216 Lake Drive in Huntsville! Interior painting is in progress!

Your help is needed! Volunteers will be working at the site most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays depending on weather and subcontractor activity.

All volunteers must take a volunteer orientation class that is given virtually every week. The dates of the training vary, so please contact Brad at social.justice@uuch.org for the latest schedule.

If you have any questions or are interested in helping out, please email social.justice@uuch.org

Upcoming Social Justice Events

Your participation is needed! Below is a list of local social justice events sponsored by groups that UUCH and/or our members support.

Here are some standing opportunities to get engaged with local organizations:

  • First Stop:
  1. Provide a meal for unhoused people (https://firststoporg.galaxydigital.com/)
  2. Donate urgently needed items (https://firststop.org/category/needs-list/)
  3. Other volunteer opportunities (https://firststop.org/ways-to-volunteer/)

For more information about a particular event or to list an event, please email social.justice@uuch.org.

Little Food Pantry

Many of our neighbors and many unhoused people visit our LFP frequently, and over the holidays and the colder part of the year, their needs increase. Consider buying a few extra cans of soup or veggies to contribute—your Board made a 5-can donation pledge from each of us as one of our Service Projects for the year! For suggestions of what to donate (and what not to donate), check out this list: Pantry Food Items. Remember that many families don’t have the experience or the equipment to handle dried beans, and that the unhoused particularly benefit from cans that don’t require can openers. A little help from us can go a long way Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non- perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
