“Cryptocurrency,” “blockchain,” “Bitcoin” – these words seem to be everywhere these days but does anyone really know what they mean?

Join us in-person on March 24th for a “Crypto 101” presentation given by Mark Quandahl, Rick Schendel, and Edward Weniger – leaders in the digital asset industry in Nebraska – who will explain, at a high-level, what virtual currency is, how it works, how it is regulated within the U.S. banking system, and how these regulations have been playing out in the real world. They will also discuss different types of cryptocurrency, what it means to “mine” cryptocurrency, and provide a real-world use case for utilizing digital asset technology to facilitate international remittances.

Mark Quandahl has a broad range of experience in commercial legal matters and government administration. Mark is experienced in public administration, banking and finance, non-depository institutions and securities regulation, government relations, litigation, Fintech, digital assets and cryptocurrencies, healthcare, and start-ups.

Mark most recently served as a member of Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts’ cabinet as the Director of the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance. Prior to that, he was a shareholder in a regional commercial law firm and is a former Nebraska State Senator (Chairman of Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee) and former Nebraska State Board of Education member.

Rick Schendel is the VP of Banking Operations for Telcoin and brings 25 years of experience in the derivatives industry, specializing in FX and Futures. Rick's past accomplishments include managing the trading desk for a $1 Bil quantitative futures fund in The Bahamas. While at Mesirow Financial for almost 20 years, he helped institutional clients manage their currency risk, grew AUM from $2 Bil to $60 Bil, and developed bespoke software to manage the execution and back-office operations. Calling Sarasota, FL home, he enjoys boating and golfing on the weekends. Rick holds a B.B. in Economics from Western Illinois University along with Series 3, 7, and 66 licenses.

Edward started the first Bitcoin company in Nebraska in 2013, and deployed the first Bitcoin kiosk in Nebraska in 2015. An IT veteran, he has always been enamored with innovative and disruptive technologies, and while trading penny stocks one day a Bitcoin chart caught his eye. His company, Alpha BTC, is focused on deploying Bitcoin kiosks, mining cryptocurrency, and consulting. He has helped organize and/or spoken at many events including AIM Infotec, Nebraska Bankers Conference, Coinfest, Block-a-thon, Digital Economy Conference, Midwest Fintech Roundtable, and Bitcoin Day.
