Hold Fast to the Word of God

  1This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
 2For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
 3Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
 4Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
 5Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
 6For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
 7Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
 8Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
 9But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.
 10But thou hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience,
 11Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
 12Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
 13But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
 14But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
 15And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
 16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
 17That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Message: Serving in the Last Days (v 1-17)

2 Timothy 3 Commentary

(3:1-9) The Dangers of the Last Days - Paul’s suffering left him with few illusions about his future; he would die before Christ returned. As has already been pointed out, this letter has the recurring tone of someone setting his personal matters in order.Paul began this chapter with remarks about degenerating conditions in society. Both Paul and Timothy had witnessed how bad “the last days” would become. Paul listed a whole catalog of attitudes and behaviors typical of “last days” people. This list also described the false teachers in Ephesus. Paul characterized them as belonging to the perennial crop of “opposition” leaders who create a following for themselves. Timothy was to resist their methods and their underlying purposes.

(3:10-17) Paul's Charge to Timothy - Paul laced his letters with encouragement, challenges, hopes, and affirmations for Timothy. In this last section before his closing remarks, Paul reflected on the significance of his and Timothy’s life together. Paul gave the consistency of his own example and the trustworthiness of Scripture as two dependable guides for Timothy’s future. Paul’s words and actions created a seamless pattern for the younger man.
Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book of 2nd Timothy with Chapter 3 and in our text we see Paul warning us of the sinfulness in the last days which will cause difficulty in our Christian Service. Paul charges Timothy to hold fast to the truth of Scriptures as Christians will suffer persecution. In making application we see that Christians will suffer persecution in these last days and we are to hold fast to the Word of God in the days ahead. How about you? Do you hold Fast to the Word of God? Let us learn from our text today and the instruction of Paul that in the last days we will suffer persecution and the key to walk through this tough time is to Hold Fast to the Word of God which is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
