We Welcome Interesting Goodies for our Welcome Baskets!
The Chamber has teamed up with the Center of Hope to create gift baskets to welcome new members to the Chamber of Central Mass South. The Chamber presents our new members with gift baskets that will not only have a monetary value but also to give the recipient an opportunity to learn more about other Chamber members and their services. These baskets make a terrific first impression and are a great way to introduce your business to new prospects. Can you help us fill these baskets with interesting goodies?
We are always seeking interesting, practical items to include in our welcome baskets. We welcome your contributions of items like modest gift certificates, discount coupons, items with your company's logo like piggy banks, thumb drives and coffee mugs, free trial items, small items your company manufactures or whatever else might promote your company and be a value to our new members.
We are looking to assemble about a dozen baskets at a time so that time sensitive material will not be out of date when received. If you would like to donate items for this program, please drop them off at the Chamber office or give us a call to arrange pick up your donated items. Contact Alix at 508-347-2761 or e-mail alexandra_mcnitt@cmschamber.org if you have any questions or to arrange a pickup. Thank you for your contributions!

UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Set to Open New Adult Psychiatric Unit in Webster
|
|
Webster, MA, October 29, 2021 – The UMass Memorial Health – Harrington Behavioral Health Department is expanding its adult inpatient services with the opening of a new Adult Psychiatric Unit (APU) at its Webster campus located at 340 Thompson Road.
On Thursday, October 28th, UMass Memorial Health – Harrington held an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in honor of the expansion and relocation of the new unit. Those in attendance included Brooke Doyle, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (DMH); Doug Brown, CAO & President of Community Hospitals for UMass Memorial Health; and Ed Moore, President of UMass Memorial Health – Harrington, along with local legislators and several members of Harrington’s Board of Directors.
The new APU will replace an existing unit that is currently located in Harrington Hospital’s Southbridge Campus. The new unit in Webster will consist of 24 newly renovated inpatients beds and will help to address the significant shortage of behavioral health services in the Commonwealth.
In addition to the Inpatient Adult Psychiatric Unit, UMass Memorial Health – Harrington’s Webster Campus includes a 16-bed Co-Occurring Disorder inpatient unit, as well as a full continuum of outpatient behavioral health services, including Partial Hospital and Intensive Outpatient programs and Addiction Immediate Care, as well as group therapy and counseling.
“Our new Adult Inpatient Unit was made possible through a $1.2 million grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, along with the resources and support provided to us by our new partners within the UMass Memorial Health leadership,” said Ed Moore, President of UMass Memorial Health – Harrington.
“Through our ongoing partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, we’ve been able to become one of the very few healthcare organizations to offer a continuous care model of mental health and addiction treatment,” Moore said. “This model provides care for individuals all the way from crisis intervention through treatment and ongoing recovery and support. This expansion represents the latest step forward in our commitment to provide the best care possible to our patients.”
“This move is something that we’ve wanted to do for a long time,” said Greg Mirhej, Vice President of Behavioral Health Services at UMass Memorial Health – Harrington. “Not only does this new unit offer an improved environment of recovery for our patients requiring inpatient psychiatric care, it also centralizes our behavioral health services to one location. Additionally, it will strengthen the ability for patients to access continuous care in one convenient location throughout their entire treatment journey and road to recovery.”
“The pandemic has exacerbated the behavioral health crisis we were already in before March of 2020,” said Eric Dickson, MD, president and CEO of UMass Memorial Health. “The communities we serve in Central Massachusetts deserve to have the best care when it comes to behavioral health. The opening of the Webster Behavioral Health Unit at UMass Memorial Health-Harrington is an important resource to provide that kind of world-class care.”
UMass Memorial Health – Harrington provides outstanding health care to patients in more than 25 communities throughout South-Central Massachusetts and Northeastern Connecticut. We are dedicated to our role as the health and wellness partner of the people in our communities and we are relentless in the pursuit of healing. Our comprehensive array of health care services and locations provides our patients with unparalleled access to care. Harrington Hospital in Southbridge provides medical and surgical inpatient care, 24-hour emergency services, inpatient adult psychiatry, an intensive care unit and comprehensive outpatient services. Harrington Hospital at Webster, Harrington at Charlton, Harrington at 169 and Harrington at Sturbridge offer primary care and specialty physicians, diagnostic imaging and more. Harrington Physician Services is our primary care and multi-specialty physician group, UrgentCare Express at Harrington in Oxford serves as a walk-in medical center for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries, and the Cancer Center at Harrington in Southbridge allows patients to receive advanced, local oncological and hematology care.

Hitchcock Academy to Host Presentation “In the Wake of the Mayflower”
Commemorating the 400th Anniversary of the First Thanksgiving with Writer Kevin Doyle and Visual Historian Karen Rinaldo
Brimfield, MA – Hitchcock Academy welcomes writer Kevin Doyle who collaborated on the book “In The Wake of the Mayflower,” printed in 2019, for a presentation with visual historian Karen Rinaldo, whose painting “The First Thanksgiving, 1621” has been featured widely, exhibited most notably at Plymouth Plantation for 20 years, and inspired the book. The pair will share thoughts on their work in this 400th commemoration of The First Thanksgiving in 1621 on Wednesday, November 17th at 12pm and 6pm at Hitchcock Academy, a community center in Brimfield, MA.
Karen Rinaldo is recognized as a visual historian and will talk about the commissioning of the painting and the process involved in creating it, the unveiling and exhibition by invitation at Pilgrim Hall, and its exhibit at Plymouth Plantation. The painting is currently on exhibit at (MOG) Museums on the Green in Falmouth, Ma., on loan from the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches through December. It has been requested to be displayed in 2022 at Pilgrim Hall Museum in Plymouth, MA. Rinaldo’s painting has been featured in textbooks, news shows, and history books. Her work has been documented since the early 70's, including a 14 minute video that documents every stroke and the process in creating “The First Thanksgiving, 1621”.
"In the Wake of the Mayflower" covers four timelines: Nauset 1602-1619, Pilgrims arrival and their relationship with the native Wampanoag, King Philip 1621-1675, and the origin of the 15 Cape Cod towns 1675-1976.
Kevin M. Doyle is a retired military combat veteran, as well as a writer and lecturer on historic places and events. His curiosity has inspired him to look for events that may be fading from public memory but deserve to be revived and celebrated by locals and visitors alike.
To reserve a seat for this presentation, visit www.hitchcockacademy.org. Lunches are available, if reserved, for the 12pm presentation for $10/person (soup/half sandwich provided by Panera) or participants may bring a bag lunch. A second presentation will be offered at 6pm. The presentation is otherwise free of charge, though donations to the presenting 501(c)3 nonprofit are always warmly welcomed.

The Piemonte region, borders France in northwestern Italy and is Italy’s most progressive culinary region. Piemonte is most known for its wines, white truffles, cheese, eggy pastas and “slow food”. Chef Rico will combine the best ingredients from the Piemonte region and will show you how to create these wonderfully inspired dishes at home. As always, you’ll get to try them all with wine parings while enjoying a great night out. As always, each course is accompanied by a specially chosen wine pairing. SOUTHBRIDGE: The Harrington Auxiliary is proud to bring back Gary McKinstry, world-renowned, professional medium and psychic, to the Southbridge Senior Center 153 Chestnut Street in Southbridge. McKinstry’s presentation, which offers attendees an opportunity to connect with loved ones who have passed to the other side, will take place on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 from 6 to 8 pm.
McKinstry’s psychic activities are legendary and have been chronicled in Ghost Hunters of America: Real Stories of Paranormal Investigators. He is one of a handful of psychics to have toured the Victorian Mansion in Gardner, which he certified as unquestionably haunted. McKinstry has also verified that the Publick House in Sturbridge is haunted and has been since the Colonial era.
At the event attendees will have an opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for a one-hour private reading with McKinstry. Raffle tickets are three for $5.
Tickets for the main event are $25 and can be purchased through Harrington Hospital’s Volunteer Office at 100 South Street, Southbridge. For more information, please call 508-765-6473 or email khibbard@harringtonhospital.org.
This event featuring Gary McKinstry is held in memory of Cecile T. Edmunds. All proceeds enable the Harrington Auxiliary to provide programs, equipment and other items that promote the work of UMass Memorial Health Harrington.
Harrington Auxiliary, established in 1932, is a non-profit organization of dedicated and impassioned volunteers whose mission is to support and enhance the excellent services provided by UMass Memorial Health Harrington.

Festival of {Giving} Trees 2021
The 2021 Festival of {Giving} Trees dates are December 2nd thru December 5th. At this point we are planning a live event and a “virtual” event. This year we will be celebrating our 24th year!
This four day family event is designed to be a holiday activity. The mission of the Festival is to raise money to help the Silent Spring Institute, the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition and The Cancer Center at Harrington Hospital fight the battle against breast cancer and to help fund cancer research. Over the past twenty years, the Festival of {Giving} Trees has raised and donated over $730,000 to these beneficiaries.
The Festival of {Giving} Trees features more than 100 uniquely decorated trees on display under one roof.
Some are elegant, nostalgic and breathtaking. Some are humorous, some are traditional and some are really hip. The only thing they have in common is that they are all different and they are all sparkling! And each and every one of them will be taken home by lucky raffle winners.
THE CHAMBER OF CENTRAL MASS SOUTH IS PROUD TO SUPPORT THE FESTIVAL OF {GIVING} TREES AGAIN THIS YEAR!

Feast of The Seven Fishes • Avellino
Thursday, December 16, 2021 • 6:30pm
The “Feast of the Seven Fishes” popularity in America can be traced back to when Italian-American families rekindled the Old Country's Christmas Eve tradition by preparing a seven-course seafood meal that both made them feel close to their homes, while celebrating the sea, a major connection in Italy. Today, it's considered one of the oldest Italian holiday traditions. Chef Rico will be preparing many of the dishes that make this special dinner a perennial favorite but will also be adding a few new twists to keep it interesting and fresh. Our traditional December “Feast of the Seven Fishes” banquet will be held on just one night this year: Thursday, December 16.
This popular event is always a sell-out so call 508-347-2321 today to make your reservation. The cost per person on this extravagant feast is $69 not including tax or gratuity.
