Volunteering with MMSD
For anyone who wishes to apply to be an MMSD Volunteer but does not have a Social Security Number (SSN), please contact the partnerships department (partnerships@madison.k12.wi.us) for further instructions prior to filling out the volunteer application. A background check will still be completed, but will take longer. Please note that U.S. citizenship is not a requirement for volunteering, and citizenship status is not a part of a background check report. Background checks are processed every 365 days. If a background check is still current, a new one will not be run until the current one expires.
All volunteers and field trip chaperones must have:
- COVID-19 vaccination verification - performed as part of the Volunteer Tracker application.
- Background check - performed as part of the Volunteer Tracker application
-
Required training - Building Security & Safety, Covid 19 Safety protocols, and Leaning Forward Together: training based on MMSD’s commitment to anti-racism, the importance of identity and relationships. These trainings are tracked for each individual person in Volunteer Tracker and are approximately 3 hours total.
You’ll receive an email when your volunteer application has been approved.
Once you’re approved to volunteer, please reach out to us to let us know your availability and interest.

Park/Drive Safely
The safety of children is a priority as you drive through school zones. Taking extra precautions to ensure safety is especially important during arrival and dismissal times when more pedestrians, cyclists, buses, and cars are in the area.
As you pick up or drop off your student, remember to park in the area designated "20-Minute Parking". Please do not park in the area marked "Bus Zone."
Also, have your children get in/out of the car on the curbside and remind your student to use the crosswalk if you drop off/pick up on the opposite side of the road.
We appreciate your efforts in keeping all our students safe!

REACH Class
Students enjoyed learning about coding during the month of December. During January we will continue to work on coding and move into more challenging coding tasks. This month we will also make connections with their current ELA unit of study. Third grade will dive deeper into learning about different types of frogs. Fourth grade will take their knowledge of animal defenses and create stop motion videos and fifth grade will explore more about rainforests through making diagrams.
Scratch Club
Scratch Club is starting next month. It will run Monday’s after school starting Monday, February 13th and ending Monday, May 1st. It will run from 1:00-2:00 pm each Monday. Since about 2008, UW-Madison students in Computer Science have been teaching local kids about computational thinking and programming in Scratch. The primary objective of our clubs is to introduce "computational thinking" to the next generation. Computational thinking is a way of solving problems that draws on concepts fundamental to computer science; computational thinking enables individuals to specify solutions so precisely that even computers can follow the directions. Information about signing up will be sent out later this month.

About COVID-19 Vaccines
COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States are effective at protecting people from getting seriously ill, being hospitalized, and dying. As with other vaccine-preventable diseases, you are protected best from COVID-19 when you stay up to date with the recommended vaccinations, including recommended boosters. The CDC recommends that all individuals over 6 months get vaccinated against COVID-19. You are eligible to receive the updated bivalent booster if it has been at least two months since your last Covid vaccine (initial series or booster).

Welcoming Schools
MMSD schools are Welcoming Schools. Welcoming Schools is the most comprehensive bullying prevention program in the nation to provide LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive professional development training, lesson plans, booklists and resources specifically designed for educators and youth-serving professionals. The program uses an intersectional, anti-racist lens dedicated to actionable policies and practices. We uplift school communities with critical tools to embrace family diversity, create LGBTQ+ and gender inclusive schools, prevent bias-based bullying, and support transgender and non-binary students. During the month of December at Marquette, students will be reading a book called Born Ready: The True Story of a Boy Named Penelope and discussing how to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community.
