PARKLET & RESTROOM PROJECT - UPDATE!

IMG_5357.jpg

Last year, we announced that in 2022, Harrison Avenue will FINALLY get a new public restroom and parklet at the Visitor's Center (adjacent to the parking lot) thanks to our partners at CDOT via the Main Street Revitalization Grant Opportunity #2. We are excited to announce that plans for the restroom and parklet are solidifying! With the oversight and project management of Hope for Homes, We anticipate the parklet opening late summer/early fall.

Last month, the team was busy with barricade fencing and other pre construction planning. This month construction has begun! If you would like more information on the Parklet, please reach out!

The Leadville Main Street parklet-restroom project will be a great addition to our visitor center in desperate need of better amenities to serve those coming through needing a place to rest, get information, and plan their stay in Leadville. Additionally, this will be another service point for locals and business owners who need reliable bathroom facilities for public use. This project is being implemented in a stakeholder collaboration of the Leadville Main Street Program, Leadville Lake County Economic Development Corporation, Lake County, City of Leadville, Lake County Tourism Panel, Leadville Lake County Chamber of Commerce, Lake County Civic Center Association, Leadville Street Department, Parkville Water, Leadville Sanitation District, and Leadville volunteers.

LEADVILLE MAINSTREET'S "LEADVILLE IN BLOOM"(formerly Planter Box Program)

LIB logo.JPG

The Leadville Main Street Program is so pleased with the success of last year's annual (online) auction, Leadville In Bloom to support the Planter Box Program! Thank you all who participated and bought a planter box/auction item, we greatly appreciate your support! We have expanded the planter box program this year and are excited to announce some new additions!

Flowers have been placed along Harrison Avenue, and are beautifying our historic downtown area! Thank you all who sponsored a planter box this year! It's so important to us at Main Street to have the help and support of our community members; we truly could not have pursued our planter box program, and all of our other programs, without it.

Business Spotlight:

Blue Vessel Florista

Blue Vessel Florista at 460 Harrison Ave. has been slinging’ flowers in downtown Leadville for one whole year and are so excited about their second summer on the avenue.

“At heart, we create meaningful floral designs for our couples (weddings + events) that are uniquely Blue Vessel Florista. When we get to design from a space of creative freedom, connection, and our highest selves- that excites us. We are an inspired floral design shop and intimate event space that’s woman-owned and a slow growth business model. Our design inspiration flows from romantic, feminine, and antique aesthetics that we love dreaming up everyday in the shop. Come enjoy being in our space. We have the best mountain views, aroma that fills the sidewalks, & all the beautiful, handmade, flowering creations and objects of affection for you to adore. The shop is an everyday flower market growing the Leadville flower scene with daily deliveries, walk-in flower bouquets, u-pick flowers, Sunday flower markets with extended hours through September 8 AM - 8 PM, dried flowers galore, and plants for your home.”

TABOR SEEKS COMMUNITY FEEDBACK

Through its recent renovations, the Tabor is being brought back to into Leadville's spotlight and has made good traction with re introducing events inside its historic walls. The Tabor team isn't done though, and have great plans to utilize the Opera House's potential to its fullest, and want to hear from the community on ways to best do that.

Please take a moment to fill out this brief survey and give your insight on the Tabor's renovation process and what you would like to see more of; be it musical events, performances, or workshops. You can either access the survey by clicking HERE, or scanning the QR code. The survey will be active until 9/18/2022, and anyone is welcome to take it.

Herald Democrat building facelift

A newly refurbished facade on the historical Herald Democrat building, 175-717 Harrison Ave., is catching the eye of visitors to downtown Leadville.

Last fall the Herald announced the receipt of a quarter-million-dollar grant to bring the facade of its building back to how it originally looked when built in 1895. Funding was made available through the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) Main Street: Open for Business (MSOB) program. It was matched locally with $50,000.

The MSOB funding was designed to help demonstrate the power of reinvestment for more vibrant Main Street districts, greater economic resilience, healthier living and better working environments in Colorado, according to DOLA.

Work on the Herald building included flipping the bricks on the front facade. Analysis was conducted to enable a match to the mortar used back in 1895. Likewise the paint was analyzed to replicate the colors originally used on the Herald’s wooden trim and the decorative cornice.

Those involved in the project along with Arkansas Valley Publishing, the building owner, included the City of Leadville; the Leadville Main Street Program; Andy Carlson and Greg Connor of Heritage A&M, a joint venture of Heritage Window Restoration LLC and A&M Renovations LLC; Thaddeus Hust of Agave Landscapes and Masonry; and Natalie Lord of Form + Works Design Group LLC, the preservation architect managing the project and providing design services.

MAINSTREET AMERICA'S "MAIN SPOTLIGHT"

Catalyzing Upper Floor Housing with the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant Program

Housing is an increasingly important concern for Main Street communities. Research conducted by Main Street America and funded by the 1772 Foundation has found that 75% of Main Street managers feel that there is not enough housing to accommodate everyone who wants to live in their district. Established models are often unable to meet these needs. Main Streets can play an important role in facilitating the development of new housing in vacant spaces in their districts, especially vacant upper floors.

In this week's Main Spotlight, learn how Rethos, the Coordinating partner for Minnesota Main Streets, is encouraging upper-floor development through their new program, "Looking Up." Funded by the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant Program, this initiative invests federal resources in activating vacant upper-floors and encourages sustainable housing development in the state.

The Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant Program is part of the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), an important source of national grant funding for preservation projects. This program is funded by Congress, and a bill was recently introduced that would ensure permanent funding for the program.

Join the Historic Preservation Advocacy conversation at the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s Past Forward 2022 to learn how you can advocate for this important program. The virtual conference will take place on November 1-4. Please select this as an event option during your registration process. A volunteer Advocacy Captain will contact you with state-specific details.

GOLDEN BURRO RECIEVES GRANT

We are thrilled to announce that our local historic restaurant, Golden Burro, has been awarded a grant from The National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express, as part of the Backing Historic Small Restaurants initiative, which had been announced earlier this year. The owners of Golden Burro have great plans to use this grant to revive and enhance their store, and we cannot wait to see the fruits of their effort!
