St. Clare Updates for
August 21-Sept 3, 2021
|
|
I hope you have enjoyed our summer weather despite some pandemic challenges. That said, we are slowly planning new church activities for September and forward.
I am pleased to see that we can once again offer some Bible Study programs, including Catholicism offered by Fr. Hawkswell, RCIA and many more.
This year we will also offer a new Wild Goose Series that is similar to Alpha, but without dinner. It has amazing video presentations and the theme is the Holy Spirit. I think we all agree that we talk and reflect very little on the third person of God.
Come and join any of our programs!
Also I am aware of existing problems with our sound system in the church. Many of you complain about the difficulty to listen to our homilies, readings etc.
It is very complex matter related to the shape of the building, the materials used and the sound system installed. In the past, I invited two independent technicians but not much was done to improve the quality. Next week I want to bring another company to look at some options.
Please stay tuned for more information about it.
Fr. Maciej

In the case of the coronavirus pandemic, such reasons include:
- anyone who is sick, symptomatic, or has been recently exposed to the coronavirus;
- anyone with significant health risk factors that requires them to avoid public spaces
- anyone who cares for someone with significant risk factors;
- anyone who cannot attend Mass through no fault of their own because of frailty or old age.
OUR MASS SCHEDULE IS :
DAILY MASSES Monday through Saturday at 9:00am and
WEEKEND MASSES Saturday at 5:00pm
and on Sunday at 8:30am, 11:00am and 5:00pm
There is also a Spanish mass at 6:30pm on Sunday

Donations at Church
If you wish to continue to make your donation at mass, please note that we will not be passing around the collection baskets at this time. Please leave your donation to the church in one of the 2 boxes at the back of the church either when you enter or when you leave.
Second Collections - When there is a Second Collection, one of the collection boxes at the back will be specifically labeled for the that collection. Envelopes should be clearly marked and can be put in either box but cash donations in the Second Collection box will be passed on for that purpose.
If you have not yet picked up your envelopes for 2021 they are in the lobby of the church. Please call the office at 604-941-4800 if you cannot find them.

Ethical Concerns Related to Vaccines
|
|
Catholics are invited to be vaccinated, both in keeping with the dictates of their conscience and in contributing to the common good by promoting the health and safety of others. All COVID-19 vaccines that are medically approved by the relevant health authorities may be licitly received by Catholics. Since there is currently no choice of vaccine being offered, Catholics in good conscience may receive the vaccine that is available and offered to them. Read more at rcav.org/coronavirus

GOD’S DOORKEEPER
Tuesday, August 31 at 7:00 pm

A video documentary about the life of St. Andre Bessette, a great Canadian Saint, will be held in St. Clare's Parish Centre on Tuesday, August 31 at 7:00 pm. Registration is free so please join us.

On January 6, 1937, the death of a humble doorkeeper for a boys' college drew over a million people to Montreal for his funeral. For forty years, Brother André Bessette of the Congregation of Holy Cross welcomed people at the door and became known as a miraculous healer. God's Doorkeeper looks at the heart and legacy of Brother André–as a man of prayer, of hospitality, and of compassion, a man who draws people in to experience a God who is love.

While the Covid pandemic continues around the world the care for people undergoing treatment for cancer also continues.
A prayer shawl is a shawl that has been knitted or crocheted within our parish for someone who is facing treatment for cancer. The shawls are meant to serve as mantles of God's gentle love and blessings. Our hope is that, as the recipients wear their shawls, they will be enfolded in warmth, peace, strength and comfort. Shawls are available by donation.
If you know of someone undergoing treatment for cancer and who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl, within our parish or beyond, please contact Laura at 604-944-9064 or ccml@telus.net

Want Some Good Summer Reading?
|
|
|
We are all familiar with Bishop Robert Barron, from his many Word on Fire video series. Here he is still Father Barron at the 2007 writing of this "magnum opus". I have just bought this book from the wonderfully-stocked Holy Family Catholic Bookstore in Langley BC. Bishop Barron is the former Francis Cardinal George Professor of Faith and Culture at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago, and this book gives a clear indication of his theology and academic standing. A demanding read that is worth the effort.
|
|
|
Looking for something less academic?
Consider these
Graham Greene: "A Catholic writer"
or "a writer who happened to be a Catholic"?
|
|
These recommendations are reviews of a book (which I have not read) about a writer that I certainly have read, studied, and taught, namely Graham Greene.
The first link is to a review in the Catholic Register, begun tellingly with "On fortuitous occasions, the right biographer finds the right subject at just the right time." Just so. The second is from Commonweal which proclaims the book under consideration as "Richard Greene’s sparkling new biography of Graham Greene".
Dip into these articles, and then give this acclaimed 20th century English writer a try. My starting point was "The Power and the Glory" significantly published in the year of my birth. Named one of the 100 best novels of the twentieth century by Time magazine, this novel is considered by many to be Greene’s finest work. Plot summary: "during a vicious persecution of the clergy in 1930’s Mexico, a worldly priest, the ’whisky priest’, is on the run, fleeing not just an unshakable police lieutenant but also his own wavering morals".

Painting of - OUR LADY OF HOPE
|
|
|
Parishioner Patricia Ballard who restored our beautiful Stations of the Cross and statue of the Holy Family has just completed a painting of Our Lady of Hope for the Marian Servants of Hope. They commissioned Patricia to paint this image for their chapel at Grace House in Vancouver.
|
|
The painting depicts an 1871 apparition of Our Lady which took place in the town of Pontmain, France during the Franco-Prussian war. Our Lady appeared for three hours in an oval form in the December starry winter night sky . She did not speak but under her feet a banner unfurled and on it was the writing “But Pray My Children. God Will Hear You In Time. My Son Allows Himself To Be Touched.”
Our Lady came to bring hope to the people who were praying for deliverance but didn’t think God was listening to their prayers. Our Lady came to encourage them to keep praying because God is listening. Eleven days after the apparition there was an armistice, the Franco-Prussian war ended and the town of Pontmain was saved from invasion.
Sister Glenys Asumpta Symons of the Marion Sisters of Hope said that she felt inspired to commission this image for our times because we are presently in great need of hope. It will be installed in Grace House in August or September 2021.

Email Fraud Warning
The Archdiocese has received multiple reports from parishioners and priests who have fallen victim to a recent Internet email phishing scam. Imposters, posing as priests and using email addresses that are similar to those of our priests, have been emailing people asking for personal donations, gift cards, and other forms of financial assistance.
Never respond to emails requesting Google Play cards, iTunes cards, or any other form of personal financial assistance, even if it appears to be from a priest, deacon, religious, parish staff or bishop. If you have any doubt, please contact the sender by other means to verify any requests.
