LORHN news & updates
September 2022
Hello ,

Thank you for staying in touch with LORHN throughout the year; we are wrapping up our first quarter of our new fiscal year and are excited about the continued success of existing programs, new ones starting, and opportunities on the horizon. Each day our team is in the field meeting rural residents where they are to provide linkage to essential needs and healthcare services. LORHN is working with partners within our region and throughout the state to improve access to quality health services, increase vaccine uptake for preventable diseases, provide relevant health information and education, coordinate trainings for rural healthcare professionals, and identify opportunities to meet emerging needs of our residents.

As we enter the winter and holiday seasons, the need for trusted information and advocates will increase. Know that LORHN Community Health Advocates are available to provide information and connect residents to services they need - from enrolling in health insurance, help making online appointments, applying for financial assistance via various programs, to finding a substance use treatment center.

As we enter the cooler months (for Florida at least) so comes the flu season, and medical experts expect another surge of COVID cases. We encourage individuals to practice recommended guidelines to remain healthy and keep families safe.
  • Get vaccines and boosters based on the recommended schedule, based on age and health status
  • Get a COVID test if you become ill (after 3 days of symptoms if you are vaccinated) and quarantine/wear a mask until results are received.
  • Wear a well-fitting mask around others indoors
  • Avoid crowds, especially with inside with limited ventilation
  • Socially distance when possible

Be well and stay safe,

Andrea Stephenson Royster, MBA, MHS, FACHE
Chief Executive Officer
Hurricane Ian Recovery Resources
Our hearts go out to our family, friends, colleagues, and neighbors on the West coast. We still have not taken in the full scope of destruction the storm has caused and remain hopeful that the loss of life is not as high as anticipated. Hurricane Ian recovery resources are listed below as well as opportunities to volunteer if you felt led to do so and are able.

Florida survivors who live in Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Pinellas and Sarasota counties can apply for federal assistance.

Stay prepared for future hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. We all have another two months of hurricane season ahead of us; the best thing we can do is prepare and plan ahead of time so we are prepared to respond quickly and efficiently. Familiarize yourself with local shelter information and complete the Shelter In Place Survey to assist the Florida Division of Emergency Management efforts after a hurricane or tropical storm.
LORHN Community Programs
Partner Spotlight: Belle Glade Pharmacy
Earlier this year Belle Glade Pharmacy agreed to have a LORHN Community Health Advocate on-site to promote the COVID-19 vaccines and boosters as well as linkage to other health, programs, and social services they may need. This partnership has helped link many residents to the vaccine and boosters and allowed them to get their $35 Winn-Dixie gift card immediately.

In the past, Belle Glade Pharmacy has also shared LORHN materials to increase awareness for our community programs, including but not limited to chronic disease education, health literacy education, and care coordination linkage services.

Vaccine Uptake in Rural Communities
As of September 22, 2022, the COVID-19 community levels for LORHN's service area are listed below. Vaccines and their boosters help prevent severe cases that can cause hospitalization and death. Individuals already living with chronic and terminal illness (i.e., asthma/lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.) are at a higher risk of developing a severe or fatal case of COVID.

LORHN Community Health Advocates continue to provide education, help make appointments, and provide $35 Winn Dixie gift cards to residents that choose to get vaccinated and/or boosted. We have linked more than 70 residents to the COVID vaccine/booster so far this year. Contact us for more information.

**Updated Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Now Available**
When Should I Get Boosted?
Boosters are an important part of protecting yourself from getting seriously ill or dying from COVID-19. They are recommended for most people.

Use this CDC tool to determine when or if you (or your child) can get one or more COVID-19 boosters.
Reducing Opioid-related Overdoses in Rural Palm Beach County
Refer to LORHN in Unite Us
or by phone/email

Community Health Advocates continue to serve Glades residents that are currently using or at risk of using opioids, alcohol, and other substances. LORHN provides assistance to individuals and families to link/re-link individuals into treatment and support services, conduct risk reduction, and link clients with other supportive services.

Just over the summertime, LORHN CHA's have helped Glades area residents apply for rental, utility, food, and unemployment assistance. Since July, the team has helped secure over $20,000 for rent and more than $3,000 for utilities for residents by helping them apply for local and statewide financial relief programs.

Help spread the word, educate the community, and help those that need it:
  • Schedule an Opioid Awareness presentation
  • Share our flyers and educational materials
  • Refer clients to our team via Unite Us, phone call (561) 557-9273, or email.

**There are no eligibility requirements for the program, it is open to all Glades area residents*
Health Insurance Enrollment
Open Enrollment for health plans that begin in 2023 runs November 1, 2022–January 15, 2023.

You can get coverage before then if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period due to a recent life event, like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby, or based on estimated household income.

Medicaid and Florida KidCare applications can be completed all year. LORHN team members can help with all of these, just give us a call.
Telehealth: Planning to Action
This past year LORHN, with funding from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) rural health network planning grant, completed a telehealth needs assessment. Thank you again to all community partners that participated on this project.

LORHN is taking the findings from this assessment to craft a strong application for additional HRSA funding to create and implement programs to expand telehealth adoption among rural healthcare providers and their rural patients. We hope to build upon and strengthen systems already in place and support our network and it's partners via education campaigns and care coordination efforts.
Stay tuned!

Lake Okeechobee Rural Health Network, Inc. LORHN was established through Florida legislation (Statute 381.0406) and is one of nine local rural health networks covering the state of Florida.
