Students Take the Lead At Alvarado

Student Voice is key at Alvarado Intermediate. An example of this is the Alvarado Language Ambassadors, created this year by teacher Mr. Jesus Gutierrez, with the mission to respect the diversity of expression within all languages. Students who are learning their second language have become student leaders on campus, directing parent District English Language Advisory Council (DELAC) meetings and presenting to the campus about their cultures and interests.

“We believe lack of syntax does not equal lack of intelligence,” says “Mr. G” as known by students and staff. “Alvarado Language Ambassadors believes that your first native language has the same worth as someone whose first language is English. These six students from Pakistan, Mexico, Philippines, China, and Vietnam are sharing their creativity, art and individual interests and beliefs with our community. I am excited and proud to see what they will do next.”

“What I love about this program is that we can be ourselves – we believe that you should Be You, Be Elite, Be Unique and Be Strong,” said Jackson Chen. Fellow Ambassador Lenni Martinez (shown above), whose passion is design and fashion, incorporated these beliefs into a graphic design.
Ambassador students and ELD/AVID/Intervention teacher Mr. Jesus Gutierrez present the program to Los Angeles County Office of Education Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo.
“My favorite thing about this program is we get to do what we love to do. We started designing posters, bracelets, a video and website and now we are are presenting. We just want people to know that you don’t have to only speak English to be successful,” said Martinez.
