SSTI has an open position for a Program Director to work on key elements of tech-based economic development, including: technology translation and commercialization, entrepreneurship, regional strategies and high-skill workforce. Responsibilities include building a community around one or more areas of broad interest to SSTI’s stakeholders, which includes engaging individuals from across the country to participate in the community and developing education and research agendas that address common concerns. The National Science Foundation-funded Engineering Research Visioning Alliance (ERVA) seeks participants for its visioning event (Nov. 2-3), which will explore Sustainable Transportation Networks. ERVA is charged with strategic convening of interdisciplinary groups of experts to collaboratively identify bold and transformative new engineering research directions. ERVA visioning events will provide unique opportunities for selected participants to advance the ERVA goal of catalyzing the pursuit of innovative, high-impact research that benefits society. LAST CALL TODAY! The National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines program is currently recruiting reviewers to evaluate its first set of NSF Engines proposals. NSF is seeking both seasoned and new reviewers with experience in core focus areas that include “use-inspired research, economic and workforce development, regional innovation ecosystem building, and translating ideas from the lab to the market”. The U.S. National Science Foundation has announced the addition of five new NSF Innovation Corps (I-Corps™) Hubs that will scale the NSF-led National Innovation Network, accelerating the translation of discoveries into new solutions. Each I-Corps Hub is funded for up to $3 million per year for five years and comprises a regional alliance of at least eight universities. The first five I-Corps Hubs were awarded in 2021, with each Hub expanding its reach this year by adding a new partner institution to their region. Read more.

In recent communications, AURP congratulated the 21 regional economic development organizations selected to receive competitive grants as part of the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) $1 Billion American Rescue Plan Build Back Better Regional Challenge, to boost economic recovery to rebuild America’s communities. 

AURP Members from Georgia, North Carolina, Missouri, Nebraska, Virginia, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma and Kansas are among these worthy participants that will collaborate with regional Build Back Better grant winners. Read more.
With the entrepreneurial dynamism behind Greater Toronto's MaRS Discovery District, David Johnston Research + Technology Park and McMaster Innovation Park, the Toronto region has netted the third most technology-based employment growth between 2016 and 2021 among 50 North American markets, according to a recent report from CRBE.

With Greater Toronto’s emergence as one of the top innovation and technology job creation markets in North America, the power of university research parks, innovation districts and tech hubs continues to prove essential to this entrepreneurial and economic vigor. Read more.
The Purdue Research Foundation received 169 patents in 2021, placing it first in both the state of Indiana and the Big Ten, plus sixth internationally. Purdue also is second among universities that do not have a school of medicine. The 2021 ranking, issued by the Intellectual Property Owners Association and the National Academy of Inventors, mirrors Purdue’s No. 6 ranking in 2020, when the foundation received 175 utility patents. The only universities ranked higher than Purdue are the University of California system; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the University of Texas system; King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia; and Stanford University. Hyundai Motor Group recently announced the company will locate its New Horizons Studio (NHS) headquarters within Montana State University’s Innovation Campus in Bozeman, MT. Hyundai’s NHS is a unit focused on the development of Ultimate Mobility Vehicles (UMVs). The MSU Innovation Campus will host Hyundai's new research, development and lab center, serving as NHS headquarters. Representing an estimated $20 million investment by Hyundai, the facility will create more than 50 jobs in Gallatin County. The estimated 12,000 to 15,000 sq. ft. facility on the Innovation Campus will support prototyping, field testing and application development for UMVs. Read more.
The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) CEO and President, Roseann O'Reilly Runte, PhD, recently published a column on "From research to economic development: a recipe for success," noting Canada needs to double down on its strengths - including talent, tools and conditions - and accelerate broad-based economic growth. "We must continue to create spaces where ideas collide, resulting in new possibilities for products and production, unexplored ways of doing business and revitalized communities," writes Dr. Runge. The Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering (ASCTE) in Huntsville opened a new facility last month in the Cummings Research Campus with more than 125,000 square feet of academic and residential space. The opening of the new campus is a multi-year collaborative effort between commercial, private, governmental, academic and nonprofit organizations. Cummings Research Park Executive Director Erin Koshut posted: "I'm excited to see this new and innovative campus open in Cummings Research Park East. It's design and practice are creating change in the Park and in the workforce needed for our community's growth. Proud to have this organization, this campus and these students inside." Read more
The Oklahoma Biotech Innovation Cluster (OBIC) Initiative – a coalition spearheaded by the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber alongside primary coalition partners including the University of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma City Innovation District and with industry leadership from Echo Investment Capital – has been awarded $35 million through the U.S. Economic Development Administration's Build Back Better Regional Challenge. The grant will fund six core investment projects, including the OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center for Therapeutics – Translational Research Labs (with the development of 10 translational research labs dedicated to drug discovery within the OU Health Stephenson Cancer Center) and the Oklahoma Biotech Startup Program. Read more
