Praying for Ukraine this Lenten season

On Tuesday March 2, 2022, the Upper New York Area Resident Bishop, Mark J. Webb, sent a letter to the Upper New York Conference, calling on all United Methodist believers and congregations in Upper New York to fervently pray for peace in Ukraine.

In this letter, Bishop Webb offers some specific and helpful areas of payer focus related to the war in Ukraine.

Nancy Notes - #41

Dear Friends,

It has been several weeks since I came to you in this space. I’ve missed it, and I hope you have, too.
Today is my 48th birthday. What??!!! You know better than that, right? While I wish it was also true chronologically, today is my 48th spiritual birthday. What do I mean? It was March 3, 1974 during Sunday morning worship at Fairview United Methodist Church in Binghamton during a Lay Witness Mission. I was 14 years old, sitting in the choir loft. Even though my father was the pastor, a lay person was preaching that day. To this day, I don’t remember a word he said. I just remember that when the invitation was given, and the hymn “Have Thine Own Way,” started to be sung, that I found myself kneeling at the altar rail, accepting Christ as my Lord and Savior. Hallelujah!
If you had asked me prior to that moment if I was a Christian, I would have said yes – but I wasn’t. Yes, I had perfect attendance in Sunday School, I was president of the youth group, I sang in the choir, I even liked going to church, I prayed every night before going to sleep, and – oh – and my father was the pastor. Of course I was a Christian. No, I wasn’t…
Let me be clear. Not everyone has an experience like mine. God knows that being subtle doesn’t always work with me, so perhaps a more dramatic experience was what I needed. That’s not true for everyone, though. Some people grow into a saving knowledge and relationship with Jesus. That is no less “valid.” I have some friends that came to Christ at a very early age – one at 4 and one at 6. I know some other folks who can’t ever remember not being in relationship with Jesus. Let’s celebrate all of these!
If you are not sure what I’m talking about, please speak with your pastor or to me. I have never, never, never, never, never… been sorry I said yes to Jesus. My life has been transformed. However, there have been many struggles along the way. If anyone tells you when you come to Christ you’ll never have another problem, they are lying through their teeth! Life is hard, and I can’t imagine living my life without being in relationship with Jesus. I was just saying to someone this week that I don’t know how people even get out of bed in the morning without knowing Jesus.
Thanks be to God for His grace and for the gift of His son in our lives! In this season of Lent, may each of us draw closer to Jesus than we’ve ever been, and may those who don’t yet know Jesus, come to enter into that blessed transformational relationship. May it be so! I am asking each of us to pray daily for at least one person we know who does not yet know Jesus. Have you shared your story with that person? Maybe you have, and the person is not receptive. That’s OK. Keep praying. Sometimes God has called me to plant seeds, sometimes to cultivate, and on a few blessed occasions to reap the harvest, and by that I mean leading someone to Christ. There is no higher privilege or greater joy.
Let’s make one of our Lenten disciplines to pray for at least one person. Will you join me?
With You in the Lenten Journey,
                     Nancy
Supporting the humanitarian response in Ukraine
The General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church is deeply troubled by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the ominous implications it has for escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations. They join many Christian leaders and organizations worldwide in deploring the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, and they ardently pray for a redirection of military action toward diplomatic measures to resolve grievances.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), the humanitarian relief arm of Global Ministries, is in communication with partners in the region and actively exploring the coordination of humanitarian response in Ukraine. You can support UMCOR’s international disaster response efforts by writing a check to the Upper New York Conference with either Advance #982450/Ukraine or UMCOR/Ukraine written in the memo line.

Click here to read more about this response from Roland Fernandes, the General Secretary of Global Ministries and UMCOR.
Giving opportunities in response to the war in Ukraine
Individuals can give directly to the Ukrainian people through local church offerings by writing a check to the Upper New York Conference with Advance #14053A in the memo line of the checks. These checks can either be placed in an offering plate or sent directly to the Conference office.

The Ukraine UMC has created a crisis committee that will oversee all the global support that is coming in through UMCOR’s Advance #14053A “Eurasia In Mission Together - Ukraine and Moldova.” The money channeled through this Advance fund will go to the Ukraine UMC church account and decisions on how this will be used will be considered by the crisis committee, which includes pastors as well as lay leaders.

UMCOR also offers other opportunities for more specific giving to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. You can designate giving by stating it is for "Ukrainian Refugee support" to the following Advance numbers.

·    Hungary In Mission Together (Advance # 00175A)
·    Poland In Mission Together (Advance # 00408A)
·    Romania In Mission Together (Advance #00211A)
·    Slovakia In Mission Together (Advance # 00236A)

Donations for Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia should be mailed directly to UMCOR Mission Together Advances at 458 Ponce De Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30308.

In-person Annual Conference survey

The 2022 Annual Conference (AC) planning committee met on Wednesday, Feb. 23, via Zoom. The main topic of conversation was the potential of an in-person AC and how it can be done safely.

If an in-person Annual Conference takes place, as planned, from June 2-4, at the SRC Arena in Syracuse, NY, safety, and hygiene practices will be in place to reduce the risk of people getting sick.

Lenten study on anti-racism
General Commission on Religion and Race is offering online Lenten resources for purchase. "Faithful Lent: Connecting the Practices of Lent and Anti-racism", is a small group resource to help make connections between the traditions of Lent and the work of anti-racism. This curriculum is available to buy and download. Click here.
Lenten resources
The season of Lent is essential for those who truly seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Because a part of what we learn in this time of self-examination is that we are what might be most in need of transformation. We might find that what might need to grow in faith and discipleship is the church and that the transformation of the world begins with building bridges and gathering up rather than with condemnation. Building a ministry for the addiction and recovery community and their families

There are 20 million people in the United States struggling with alcohol or drug addictions. There are another 20 million people living in recovery. Close to half of the U.S. population has a family member who is addicted to drugs and alcohol.

For many years, churches have opened their doors to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings as well as Al-Anon meetings for family members of individuals struggling with addiction.

Jonesville UMC in the Albany District is taking it a step further with its Stigma Takes Away Hope and Life (STAHL) ministry and its Alcoholism and Addiction Family Recovery Resource Center.

Jonesville’s pastor, the Rev. Youngjae Jee, also dedicated 12 Sundays to deliver sermons on each of the 12 steps used by people in their recovery journeys.

The church membership is growing as the congregation warmly welcomes those struggling with alcoholism or substance abuse disorder, those in recovery, and their families.

New- Focusing on discipleship
The mission of the United Methodist Church is creating disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. So, what is a disciple?

The Upper New York Conference has updated our website to better highlight the focus of our Conference—the tab for “our focus” is on our homepage— https://www.unyumc.org. In this section we list six characteristics that define a disciple of Jesus Christ. Click here to read “Our Focus.”

Another great resource to learn more about creating disciples is the See all the People website, which is a movement to “stop fixing our church and start seeing all the people Christ calls us to reach.” #Seealllthepeople has dozens of resources on creating intentional discipleship systems and methods of building relationships.

What the end of the NY state mask mandate means for local churches

New York State Governor Hochul lifted the mask mandate for all vaccinated and unvaccinated persons effective Feb. 10. This means businesses are no longer required to mandate that all persons in their facilities wear face masks. Pastors and other local church leaders are now asking what this means for their churches, particularly as it relates to worship and other gatherings.

Don't Wait, Get Your Federal Tax Exemption Letter!

Did you know that, as a United Methodist ministry, it is easy to get a letter proving your tax-exempt status – without applying directly to the Internal Revenue Service? The General Council on Finance and Administration (GCFA), and sister agency to (GBHEM), United Methodist Women, and others, have received a “group ruling” designation from the IRS.
Basically, an umbrella or central organization (GCFA) takes over some of the administrative functions that would normally fall to a backlogged IRS, so that subordinate organizations, like United Methodist camps, churches, and other ministries can apply to the central organization for inclusion in their group. What that means for you is that, rather than applying directly to the IRS, you can apply online easily and quickly through GCFA. GCFA, rather than the IRS, will check your documentation and issue a letter of inclusion – meaning that you are included in the overall United Methodist group ruling for tax exemption.
Don't wait. Recently the IRS issued notice that it may change the group ruling policy. While we don’t know when those changes may take place, it is quick and easy to get a letter of inclusion in the denominational group ruling currently, so act quickly, before any changes take place.
There are a couple of important things to note: The online form is very straightforward for local United Methodist churches and the local church can quickly get its letter at the below link. For ministries that are affiliated as United Methodist organizations, such as a church, child care program, or a summer camp, the organization must have its own EIN, board, and organizing documents. Also, this tax exemption verifies your federal status and does not affect any state tax ruling.
You can visit www.umgroupruling.org to get started.
