City's Culinary Arts District Featured in the New Pelican

Check out the latest issue of the New Pelican to read an article about the influx of restaurants moving into Oakland Park’s Culinary Arts District, excerpt below.

Former mayor John Adornato is living in Maryland but he’s proud of the progress of the Culinary Arts District. “It’s really moving forward with what we initiated over 10 years ago. It’s incredibly exciting to see the progress Oakland Park is making,” said Adornato, who served on the commission when the district was approved in 2012. “You never know how long it’s going to take or where that financial investment is going to be . . . I can’t say I had an expectation but I certainly had a hope (it would get to this level of development within five years).” The L-shaped district is located on both sides of Dixie Highway from the Middle River north to the Urban Farming Institute and along the south side of Oakland Park Boulevard from the Peter Pan Diner west to the old Kmart site that is now home to Sprouts Farmers Market, a residential development, and a public waterfront promenade. Learn About the Broward County Premium Mobility Plan

Broward County Transit (BCT) has launched its Premium Mobility Plan (PREMO) to improve transportation in Broward County. The Premium Network will increase annual ridership, stimulate economic development, support affordable housing, and expand small business opportunities. PREMO began by exploring mobility needs and trends in Broward County to identify major roads where premium transit investments can be made. With the PREMO plan, BCT will add over 200 miles of new premium transit service, have approximately 23 million annual ridership, 100% electrified bus fleet, and new Intelligent Transportation Systems on our roads. BCT is offering a Virtual Workshop on June 6th, 8th, and 10th for individuals to learn about PREMO, give feedback via surveys, and ask questions during live Q&A sessions. BCT encourages you to provide comments, ask questions, and express concerns about the study. Take the latest survey to let BCT know what you think about the PREMO network. Visit the PREMO website to learn more.

Information on Medicaid Coverage

As concerns surrounding COVID-19 decrease, states are reviewing individual eligibility for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). States will use the information they have to decide if you or your family member(s) still qualify for Medicaid or CHIP coverage. If the state needs more information from you to make a coverage decision, they’ll send you a renewal letter in the mail. For details, check your Medicaid notice or contact the state Medicaid office.

Here are some things you can do to prepare for the renewal process:

  1. Update your contact information - Make sure the state has your current mailing address, phone number, email, or other contact information so they can contact you about your Medicaid or CHIP coverage.
  2. Check your mail - The state will mail you a letter about your coverage. This letter will let you know if you need to complete a renewal form to see if you still qualify for Medicaid or CHIP.
  3. Complete your renewal form (if you get one) - Fill out the form and return it to the state right away to help avoid a gap in your coverage.

If you no longer qualify for Medicaid or CHIP

You may be able to buy a health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace® and get help paying for it. Many enrollees can find plans that cost less than $10 a month. Plans cover things like prescription drugs, doctor visits, urgent care, hospital visits, and more. Explore Marketplace plans and savings. If you’re eligible, you may be able to sign up for Medicare or change your current Medicare coverage. Get started with Medicare.

For More Help

  • Contact the state Medicaid office for more information.
  • Call the Marketplace Call Center at 800-318-2596 to get details about Marketplace coverage. TTY users can call 855-889-4325.

Be Prepared for Hurricane Season

The six-month Hurricane Season started on June 1st and continues through November. This season NOAA is forecasting a range of 12 to 17 named storms with winds of 39 mph or higher. Of those, 5 to 9 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 1 to 4 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). Busy seasons in recent years have served as important reminders to be prepared and stay alert. Visit the City website to sign up to receive CodeRED emergency alerts. If you have not already done so, now is a good time to put together an emergency plan and prepare a hurricane supply kit so you are ready in the event of a storm in our area. A Disaster Preparedness sales tax holiday is underway now through June 9th, and a second sales tax holiday is scheduled to take place from August 26th to September 8th, 2023. Click here for a Hurricane Preparedness Guide with safety tips, a planning checklist, shelter information, and more.
