Not sure how to access your
Virginia vital records?

We can help!

Certified copies of birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates can be obtained from the Virginia Department Health (as long as the event occurred in Virginia).
Who can apply for vital records? Applications for vital records can be made for oneself or immediate family member. A mother, father, husband, wife, adult son or daughter, brother, sister, grandparent or adult grandchild with valid identification are all eligible to apply for vital records. Aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws and ex-spouses are not eligible to obtain a vital record. Birth records can be issued to the legal guardian with proof of custody papers.

Copies of marriage licenses may also be obtained from your city or county Clerk’s Office.

Can I apply in person? Yes, walk-in requests can be made from the Vital Records Department of most RCAHD local health department offices, Monday through Friday, 8:00 - 4:00pm. Bring a valid ID with you. Find your local RCAHD office addresses and phone numbers here.

How much does it cost? The fee for a vital record is $12.00 for each certificate, copy and/or search of a vital record. Cash, check, money orders, VISA or Mastercard are accepted.

Can I apply for my records online? Yes, you can request certified copies of birth, death, marriage and divorce certificates on the VDH website. Fulfillment time typically takes about 8 weeks.

In an effort to increase accessibility and convenience, VDH has launched an online express vital records application service called VitalChek. VitalChek is available online or toll free at 877-572-6333. An additional fee is charged by VitalChek for this service, and all major credit cards are accepted.

RCAHD COVID-19 Situation Update
08/16/22
At this time indicators for COVID-19 activity remain elevated, but both lab-reported cases and hospitalizations have decreased since last week. Still, all seven localities in RCAHD are considered in High Transmission by the Centers for Disease Control, so additional precautions are recommended for residents, such as masking while in public, indoor settings. We also encourage everyone to get up-to-date with their boosters. Find a dose at your local health department office or pharmacy.
