Hello Northern Virginia,

The NVCT-managed Save River Farm Committee Receives Conservationist of the Year Award from Garden Club of Virginia

On Wednesday, September 28, 2022, The Garden Club of Virginia awarded the Save River Farm committee their Elizabeth Cabell Dugdale Award for Meritorious Achievement in Conservation for its efforts to protect the historic River Farm.

Our Save River Farm campaign was a labor of love that resulted in protecting an iconic place for all time. The grassroots NVCT-managed campaign was made possible by all the community stakeholders that supported the protection of this gorgeous piece of history.

We want to thank GCV for recognizing our committee's work as we look for the next incredible place that needs our help!

Oak Hill Day Returns and is a Huge Success!

This year's Oak Hill Day was finally able to be an in-person event after several years off, and people came out in large numbers, ready to explore an important piece of Fairfax County's history that NVCT protects.

In 2004, we helped to protect Oak Hill by partnering with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Park Authority, and Seville Homes to place the historic property in a conservation easement.

Hunting Creek is Clean Again Thanks to NVCT’s Volunteers

Our recent Kayak Cleanup in Alexandria went as fantastically as we hoped. The volunteers – both solo and families - explored the beauty of Hunting Creek while removing the trash and debris that unfortunately pile up on its shore each year. This fragile ecosystem is one of the last tidal marshlands in the city that NVCT is proud to steward and protect.

With so many young people helping with the cleanup, we know that our future is bright as they learned how trash and recycling that’s not properly disposed of can negatively impact our environment, especially water quality. Hunting Creek and the Potomac River are in better shape today because of these volunteer efforts. Special thanks to the Porto Vecchio condo building for hosting us and Transurban, who provided grant funding for the kayak rentals.

Thank you to everyone that participated, and definitely be on the lookout for more events like this where you too can get involved in protecting our lands and waters!
