Dear Sangha,
How do we bear witness to loss?
Of course there is no one way. But ultimately, we cannot stand aside and look on, separate and uninvolved. In the realm of Thusness there is no such entity as a bystander. We are, each one of us, participants.
Every culture has its formalities. If someone has died, there may be a tradition of wearing black, or white, of tearing your clothing, or even, in ancient China, of putting your shoes on your head.
But when we embody the forms, 100%, without holding back one iota—form, feeling, perceptions, impulses, consciousness all become one. Then formality is not just formality—it becomes a pure expression of the Dharma.
The purpose of our practice is not to overcome feelings or become free of them. It is to become intimate with the critical event that has come to meet us. When we awaken our body/heart/mind, all sentient beings come alive. Then it is possible, in an instant, to activate our fitting function. What is it?
Yours in the undying dharma,
Jeong Ji
