Updated for the week of November 12, 2021
MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Hello Everyone,
Yesterday, we honoured our veterans and their wives on Remembrance Day. We are thankful to those who made such tremendous sacrifices for our freedom.
At the breakfast table yesterday, each resident received a crochet poppy to wear. (we are thankful to those who made and donated these to us) Staff received a crochet poppy as they arrived at work yesterday. We then had a special service and Remembrance Day tea.

Well, the leaves are falling, we turned our clocks back and we are getting our warmer clothes out. This is a great time for a drive to enjoy Lennox & Addington County. Last year the County GIS staff created some great senior friendly things to do (more details about this later in the newsletter). One of the items featured includes 6 guided road maps to use featuring different driving routes across the County. The maps include information, history and highlights along the route. These maps are available in our Resource area (just behind the screeners desk) or you can click HERE to choose your route, print it out, and give to your loved one to use as your co-pilot on your drive.

We have released our Annual Resident Satisfaction Survey as well as Family Satisfaction Survey. As in the past 4 years, we have partnered with 6 other LTC Homes around the area so that we can compare and contrast our results. This year, we are fortunate to have a number of Napanee District High School students completing their co-op with us and they are assisting the residents to complete their survey. Partnering with the High School is an excellent way to expose students to LTC and hopefully attract them to work in healthcare in some capacity!

The Family Satisfaction Survey link is below and I would encourage you to complete this survey and provide us with your suggestions, compliments and comments. This survey will close on November 30 2021

If this is your first time reading our newsletter, I would encourage you to go to this link where you will find the previous newsletters should you wish to view them. Should you ever not want to receive these newsletters, please follow the prompts on the newsletter at the bottom to unsubscribe. Also, if you ever feel that you would prefer to not have a picture of your loved one included in our Family Newsletter, please reach out to Bobbie-Joe at bblackburn@lennox-addington.on.ca or by calling at ext 7224.

Chat with you in our next newsletter on November 26.

General Visiting Hours
General visitors can enter the Home between 10am – 7pm.

If the resident requires assistance to get outside and you are not able to enter the building to pick them up, the visit will need to be pre-booked using our online booking tool - Picktime here.

Given the increase in screening that will be required as we continue to re-open our doors, we do need to initiate no entrance/exit daily between the hours of 12:15 – 12:45pm and 5:15pm- 5:45 pm. This will allow staff to take breaks and complete required tasks associated with the screening and infection control processes.
If you are coming to assist your person during the meal time in their room, or have booked the Gibbard Family Dining Room, please ensure to arrive prior to these times as the door will not be manned during the no entrance/exit hours listed above.

NOTE: Shift Change will result in delays for non-staff. (2:30 and 6:30pm)

Should an individual test positive using this Rapid Antigen test, you would need to have a PCR test completed at the Assessment Center to confirm the positive diagnosis.

Greetings Everyone,

As you may have seen throughout your visits here at JMPC, we have started a Spirit Squad! Our goal is to boost staff morale and improve the overall atmosphere in the home. We plan activities each month such as theme days, food days, raffles and much more... We started this project at the beginning of the year, including Activation staff to help include residents in the fun as well.

In order to host food days and raffles for the staff, we run all different types of raffles with some of the profits going fully to the Spirit Squad to fund staff events, while others we fundraise to donate to local charities. We are always very forthcoming with what the proceeds will go towards supporting.

With all that said we wanted to invite you to participate in a raffle we are having. We will have two identical scratch ticket raffle baskets put together for staff and visitors into the home to purchase tickets on. One winner will be a staff member and the other winner will be a visitor. All proceeds from this raffle will be going back into the Spirit Squad to be able to put on many fun events for December. If you would like to purchase tickets please see Colleen York at reception during office hours. Purchases can only be made in person and are cash only. We appreciate all your support and thank you for participating! Tickets will be on sale until November 19th.

Sincerely,
The Spirit Squad

Absences from the Home
Short Term Outings – Leaving the property for social or other reason but not overnight. This does not need to be booked or approved. However, it is important to note that if the resident is going out with a non-essential caregiver, we will require you to reach out to the charge nurse on the residents floor to arrange a pick up time.  Anyone picking up the resident must come into the vestibule and go through the active screening process but do not require COVID testing. Residents who are able to complete these short term outings independently need to ensure they complete the Sign Out Book located just outside the nursing station on the counter.

Temporary Outing – Leaving the property and includes overnight of one or more nights. For these overnight outings, the ministry requires an advanced approval process for these absences. All temporary outings must go through the Manager assigned to the Resident Home Area. This is the form to utilize.  Please note that upon residents return from an overnight outing, they must be isolated, have a PCR test and await the results. Upon receiving a negative result they can come out of isolation.
Resident Home Areas
These Resident Home area extensions below will take you to the Charge Nurse who is the RPN on your persons floor. The RPN is a great person to connect with if you have questions related to medications, health status updates, or general resident centered information. The RN Team Leader extension is an option if you are having difficulty accessing your respective home area or have further concerns.

Mandatory Training Videos
Training videos are mandatory for you to watch prior to entering the building

This training needs to be completed prior to your first visit and then monthly thereafter.
A component of the Directives that the Ministry released includes a mandatory requirement for Homes to ensure that Essential Caregivers coming into the Home receive training on putting on and taking off PPE as well as training on effective hand washing. Below are the 2 video clips for you to view. You will be asked to confirm at the screening table that you have watched these 2 videos prior to entering.

Here are short video clips to resources that will help you to understand how to use PPE properly and how to effectively hand wash.

Infection Control from the desk of Emily Sarley
What is the difference between COVID-19 and the flu?
Flu and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and seasonal flu (most often just called “flu”) is caused by infection with one of many influenza viruses that spread annually among people.

Because some symptoms of flu and COVID-19 are similar, people may need to have a COVID test to tell what virus is causing their illness. People can be infected with both a flu virus and the virus that causes COVID-19 at the same time. In general, COVID-19 seems to spread more easily than flu and causes more serious illnesses in some people. Compared with people who have flu infections, people who have COVID-19 can take longer to show symptoms and be contagious for longer. This FAQ page from the CDC compares COVID-19 and flu, given the best available information to date.
Essential Caregiver Designation
The Ministry of Long Term Care updated visiting policy requires written documentation that supports the essential caregiver designation. As a result, we have created a PDF form that you can open electronically and fill in the blanks. There are a couple of options to return the form to us via email or fax. Alternatively, we will have hard copies of this document available with the screeners at JMPC where you can complete and drop off to them.

Essential Caregivers must submit this form to be approved as an essential caregiverIn the event that COVID restrictions are changed, it will be important to have this essential caregiver designation in place in advance as it is difficult to predict the restrictions that we may be directed to implement.

Should the resident/POA wish to change/add an essential caregiver, a new form will need to be submitted. There is no limit to the number of essential caregivers that a resident/POA can designate.

Alzheimer's Society
Opportunities to have Meaningful Visits:
Even people who are well into the later stages of dementia still have feelings; everyone needs to feel supported. Visiting is an important way for you to support the person with dementia and stay connected now that you are no longer providing day-to-day care. Visiting may be emotionally difficult for some people. It is important to do what feels right for you. Visits can be: • A way to continue life-long routines: Schedule visits around activities like sharing a meal together. • A social time: Consider timing your visit to participate in a group activity such as a musical event. • A chance for some more personal time: enjoy quiet times alone together reading or reminiscing. • A way to build connections: consider having other family members visit, such as children to help the person feel more connected. • An outing to an art gallery or to a local garden. Remember to discuss your plans with the staff before the outing. There may be many people visiting at different times. To help you and the person with dementia remember who visited and the details of the visit, create a visitor guest book. Check with the staff first to see if it is possible to leave a visitor guest book in the person’s room. If visiting is not an easy option due to distance, try recording your voice or sending pictures of you and other family members so the person continues to feel connected.

Making Wishes Happen!
We love making resident wishes happen.
When Keith brought his wish forward, we figured out how to make this happen!
Keith received a service award while he was in the Army and The Black Canal Tattoo Company in Napanee created a stencil of this medal to place on his arm.
Keith was speechless and really happy to be able to do this in time for Remembrance Day.

Lunch Time Drive-In Movie
The idea behind this November program was to offer a movie theater experience. We made tickets that residents could redeem to see the movie. They had 4 movie options to choose from. Each resident was presented with the opportunity to attend the movie they liked most! Movie info sheets were created with the movie name, a blurb on the movie, rating, length etc as if they were going to an actual movie theater. This gives each resident the independence to choose which movie they would prefer! Once selected, they received a ticket with the date and time to attend! (one ticket/resident). While at the movies, they enjoy a local lunch from Deli Fritz subs as well as other canteen style movie snacks (popcorn, chips, and pop)

Feature Presentation for November 4 was

Feature Presentation for November 10 was “The Greatest Showman”
