A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
September 16th, 2021

Dear colleague,

This bulletin contains a few important changes that we have made at CUGH. We have extended the deadline for submissions for both panels and abstracts for CUGH2022 to Oct. 15th. Satellite submissions are also open and anyone can submit a proposal at www.cugh2022.org. Also, panelists and abstract presenters are not required to attend the conference in person, which means they can present virtually. Panels must be submitted by a CUGH member, however panelists and abstract presenters can be nonmembers.

Registration is open for our virtual symposium on Climate and Health Through Three Lenses which will held October 15th. The symposium is free to attend and open to all. It was created in advance of the Conference of the Parties meeting (COP26) to identify and share solutions that will address climate change and health and to engage African experts in advance of the COP27 meeting, which will take place in 2022 somewhere in Africa. We will release a white paper and aggregate solutions to address these twin challenges which will be shared at the COP26 in Glasgow. For the event we have secured a stellar list of speakers.

Stay tuned for upcoming webinars on oral health on Oct. 28th.

Best wishes,

Keith Martin, MD, PC

The CUGH 2022 Abstract Advising Program has EXTENDED its deadline for mentees to September 24th! This program connects early-career CUGH and AFREhealth members (advisees) with more experienced CUGH and AFREhealth members (advisors) for assistance with the quality of their abstract prior to submission for CUGH2022 (deadline October 15th, 2021).

Attention colleagues from LMICs

If you are a scientist, researcher or implementer from a low or middle-income country, send us your commentaries that describe innovations, challenges and opportunities in global health. Submissions should be between 500 to 800 words. Submitters may also include videos that describe the issue. Some will be published in our bulletin and on www.cugh.org. We hope this platform will draw attention to these issues.

Ebola met us unaware in Liberia in 2014. Less information about the disease, and misinformation made it difficult to manage the disease initially. But with better knowledge about the disease, change in the attitude of the citizens, and early seeking of treatment increased the survival rate. The lesson learned from Ebola can be compared with the onset and management of COVID-19.

CUGH Events & Updates (cont.)

The COVID-19 pandemic led to global lockdowns that disrupted international travel and severely challenged partnerships between the Global North and Global South. This article reports on a recent Satellite meeting of the AFREhealth-CUGH Working Group at the CUGH 2021 conference which provided insights on North-South and South-South global heath partnerships, against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health human resources deficits in low-income countries are significant. Colleagues in these nations have said that building their capacity to train their workers is a top priority. To help address this, we created an online capacity building database so that institutions, especially in low resource settings, could share their training needs (trainers and curricula) across biomedical and non-biomedical disciplines. Those who have these assets and are willing to share them can post on the site too. Please use the following site to connect training needs with educational assets and help our colleagues to strengthen their training capabilities.

CUGH's Subcommittee on Master's and Undergraduate Degrees in Global Health (SMUDGH) has created and approved four one-page information sheets on advising, experiential learning, learning objectives, and curricula in global health.

This Declaration is the first document of its kind from the global planetary health community outlining what actions are necessary to achieve the Great Transition: a just transformation to a world that optimizes the health and well-being of all people and the planet.

As you know, The Great Transition requires rapid and deep structural changes across most dimensions of human activity. Every person needs to safeguard the health of the planet. This is why we are calling upon all stakeholders to take urgent and decisive action. These recommendations are not exhaustive; rather, they are a compass guiding us towards the most promising pathways to support a more equitable and resilient post-pandemic world.

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in partnership with the Institute for Global Health Sciences, University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) invites applications for a full-time ladder rank faculty position at the Associate or Full Professor rank.
The UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics (DEB) is the largest department of epidemiology in the University of California system and has a strong mission in education, research, and clinical activities. The Department provides a supportive academic environment for original research, including opportunities for collaboration with researchers from other departments and UCSF Schools, as well as teaching and mentoring as part of our Master’s Degree in Clinical Research, our doctoral program in Epidemiology and Translational Science, and other training programs.

Investigators from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs, World Bank designated low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and previously designated LMICs re-categorized as high income on or after January 1, 2021) are currently underrepresented in mental health research, curtailing their ability to partner and learn with other countries in conducting research on shared priorities.

The goal of this initiative is to support the scientific work and research career development of exceptionally talented scientists who are in the early, formative stages of their careers and who plan to make a long-term career commitment to mental health research. This initiative seeks to assist these researchers in launching an innovative basic, translational, clinical, or services research program that holds the potential to transform the understanding, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment of mental illnesses in low-resource international settings.

The Fogarty International Center at NIH offers funding to support global health research. Fogarty also offers a variety of resources for those seeking global health research funding across NIH, and from other organizations.

The following three resources from Johns Hopkins University are continuously updated repositories of federal and private funding opportunities for individuals in various stages of their career.
