Mary Magdalene Church

~Weekly Update~

Mary Magdalene Church is an inclusive church in the Catholic tradition where people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to the Lord’s table. We strive to live the values that Jesus taught, to honor and respect each individual and to share the joy of God’s unconditional love in our community and beyond.

~A Message from Reverend Lori~

Dear Denise,

Happy first week of Advent, and wow! I manage to forget year to year all the emails, texts and ads we are bombarded with once Black Friday arrives - let alone Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday and more. So I'll start by saying "thank you" for taking the time to read this email in the sea of so many others! This community is chock full of loving, giving people, and I'm sure you already know a thousand ways to bring cheer to those who need it most, but just in case, here are a couple more places you can give in a heartfelt way this holiday season.

First, Mary Magdalene Church is again collecting gift cards for the residents at Parkside/DePaul in conjunction with the East Rochester Area Churches Resource Center. Our goal is to offer 15 people gifts to celebrate the holidays; we currently have five. If this opportunity to give speaks to you, all you need to do is bring a $25 gift card from Dollar General, Wegmans or Big Lots to church no later than December 15th. We will get the cards to the Parkside/DePaul residents in time for Christmas.

Second, our Social Justice group is collecting gifts for migrants workers attending Oscar Romero Inclusive Catholic Church here in Rochester. You can find a tree with needed items at the top of the stairs - things like hats, gloves, toys, and English as a Second Language materials. You can take a gift tag from the tree and return your gift by Friday, December 20th with the tag attached. The gifts will be delivered to Oscar Romero Inclusive Catholic Church in time for their community Christmas gathering.

And then, of course, there is the Capital Campaign here at Mary Magdalene Church that was launched by the InReach/OutReach team and the Board of Trustees this week. You can find more information about that effort and its impacts here! And your gift can be made anonymously by choosing that option on the donation site.

With all that said, the greatest gift you can give this year is your loving presence with the people you meet each day. We are the Angels of Mercy God sends to make sure the world is a better, brighter place. Every time we are kind, patient, awake and aware, we are following our call as Christians. As the hymn says, "His law is love, and his Gospel is peace." Thank you for being both in a beautiful and hurting world.

All the love,

Rev. Lori

PS

Don't forget to join us for the last night of our Religious Trauma workshop tomorrow, Dec 5 at 7 pm in the library.

PSS

I offer my deepest thanks to the Angel of Mercy who sent me a Penzeys Hug. It was waiting for me when I got to church on Sunday morning, and I am so grateful for the love!

Our discussion will begin on Tuesday, January 7th at 6:30 PM (Zoom and the library). Since winter is always so tricky we will meet on Zoom on bad weather evenings. A new Zoom link will be sent to you when you register. Please contact Joyce Martelli at jemmartelli@gmail.com so that we know you are interested. We hope you will join us!

Snow Angels

It's that time of year again when we ask for volunteers to help clear the sidewalks and steps of snow and ice on Sunday mornings. We have a power shovel that is relatively easy to use and several regular shovels. Rock salt is available inside the back door and near the elevator in the front of the church. You would need to arrive to church early, between 9:15-9:30. Many hands make light work! If you can help please contact Sue. Thank you!

Winter Clothing Drive

On October 1st, we will begin collecting new or gently used winter apparel (coats, hats, gloves) for men, women, and children. Look for the collection box in the foyer of the church. These items will be distributed to those in need through the Open Door Mission and House of Mercy in Rochester. This drive will end on December 18th. In the past, over 200 coats have been collected as part of this project!

We meet via Zoom the first Friday of every month. Contact Dory Deisenroth at deisdor@gmail.com for more information and the Zoom link.

CALM Ministry

CALM Ministry is a ministry of listening. We believe the gift of listening helps to alleviate suffering and that the gift of presence is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another. If you are hurting or lonely, we have trained soul-listeners who offer time and space to truly listen in a confidential and non-judgmental manner. CALM Ministers are not counselors and do not offer advice. They do, however, offer a warm heart and a soft landing place. For more information, please see our brochure, or email Lori Cunliff at calm.ministry.mm@gmail.com
