Dear Friends,

The Episcopal Diocese of New York has a big decision to make in the very near future. At the diocesan convention last November, Bishop Dietsche announced his upcoming retirement. Thus he set in motion a process to name his successor, who will serve first as Bishop Coadjutor (assistant bishop with the right to succeed) and eventually as the Bishop of New York. A “Committee to Elect a Bishop” was appointed and tasked with presenting the diocese with a slate of candidates. For the past year the committee has worked especially hard and now brings before us five Episcopal priests who have agreed to stand for election. The voting will take place at a special convention to be held at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Saturday, December 3.

Who are the candidates? They are, in alphabetical order: Matthew Heyd from the Diocese of New York, Stephanie Johnson from the Diocese of Connecticut, Matthew Mead from the Diocese of New York, Stephen Paulikas from the Diocese of Long Island, and Robert Taylor from the Diocese of North Carolina. At the Sunday Forum this week and next we will have the opportunity to delve deeply into the materials provided by the candidates. Each one has videotaped a greeting, and we’ll hear more about their current ministry settings and visions for the Diocese of New York. Most of what we’ll see is available online here, but the value of processing the information and sharing impressions together is great. Last week I was at a clergy luncheon and the impressions of one candidate went from a distant fifth to number-one in the space of about ten minutes.

Who votes at the December convention? Every parish in the diocese is allotted a certain number of lay delegates, depending on the size of the membership. Grace Church has three lay delegates, and they are the two wardens, Owen Boger and Douglas Evans, and from the vestry, Douglas Armer. Also, clergy who are canonically resident in the diocese each have a vote. Voting takes place by orders, lay and clergy. Once a candidate reaches a certain percentage of votes in both orders, that candidate will be declared the winner. Sometimes it takes just a few ballots to reveal the mind of the convention – which hopefully reflects the mind of the Holy Spirit. At other times the balloting can go on all day.

I hope you will join us on Sunday at 10 am to learn more about the process and the candidates. Also, back by popular demand, the Sunday Forum is on Zoom, so if you can’t be here in person you can still be part of the discussion.

See you in church,

Today
The Sunday Forum at 10 am – Meet the Candidates for Bishop of New York – This Sunday and next the forum will discuss the candidates for the next bishop of New York. Last November the Rt. Rev. Andrew Dietsche, Bishop of New York announced his plans to retire.  Since then, a search committee has been at work to nominate a slate of candidates who will stand for election at the Cathedral on Saturday, December 3. How will the electing convention work?  Who are the candidates and what gifts and abilities would they bring to the ministry of bishop?  Join us for two Sunday Forum sessions on the upcoming election, 10 am in the Reception Room or on Zoom.
Choral Evensong at 4 pm – Rejoice in the Lamb by Benjamin Britten will be offered as part of Choral Evensong by The Choir of Men and Boys with the Adult Choir today at 4 pm in the Church. This beloved annual offering returns this season after the interruptions of the Covid lockdowns.
Refreshments and FellowshipAfter 9 and 11 am services in Tuttle Hall and the lovely outdoor courtyard called Seymour Close. Join us for coffee or something cool to drink, as well as homemade goodies compliments of the Guild of Bakers.
Wear your nametags! Nametags can be found on the boards in Tuttle Hall. Newcomers are encouraged to visit our new welcome table during coffee hour to create their own nametags. If you are a pledging member and do not see your nametag on the boards in Tuttle Hall, please send Travis Kennedy an email so, he can make you one.
Sunday 6 pm Eucharist – The weekly 6 pm Sunday Eucharist in the Chantry has returned. Join us for hymns with instrumentalists and sermon. An important component of the Sunday 6 pm service is Canterbury Downtown, the college fellowship that meets for dinner and discussion after the service. All college students welcome.
The Guild of Bakers – The summer has depleted our stockpile of coffee hour goodies! If you enjoy baking (or buying) cookies, brownies, muffins, or other freezable bite-sized treats, please consider joining a revitalized ministry called the Guild of Bakers. You can participate on your own timetable, whenever the Spirit moves you. The next time you are baking (or buying) goodies that would be popular at coffee hour, all you have to do is make an extra batch. Just wrap it well and drop it off at the parish office any time during business hours, or on Sundays after church. We have plenty of freezer space to store your culinary creations for a future coffee hour. Please sign up for the “Guild of Bakers” by sending an email to Mickey Hawley, Parish Office Coordinator.
