Dear Beth Jacob Members,
At Beth Jacob, we have always said that a key element of connecting, collaborating and strengthening ties in our community is Kitchen Duty! Historically, all congregants were assigned a number of shifts throughout the year, and it really showed what we can do as a volunteer led force. Kitchen Duty allowed us to make new connections, reconnect with people we haven't seen in a while, and participate in the literal nourishment of our community.
Since the pandemic, we have shifted away from assigned dates and leaned on you to tell us when you could help. We truly appreciate all the volunteering, and we welcome you to continue checking in with the volunteer mashgichim to see if extra help is needed!
Now that we have more regular attendance at services once again, we are reinstituting assigned Kitchen Duty shifts. We will randomly assign congregants to volunteer shifts, thus assuring that as many people as possible feel part of this invaluable service, and that we are not relying on only a few volunteers to serve the kiddush meals that so many of us enjoy. You will be assigned to a Kitchen Duty shift approximately 2-3 times a year. If you cannot make your shift, we ask that you switch with someone on another shift (you will receive a list of “neighboring” shift assignments with contact information).
Each Shabbat, there is a trained volunteer Mashgiach (kitchen supervisor) who knows exactly what needs to be done. The Mashgiach will assign roles to volunteers (pouring wine, arranging cookies, setting out plates, collecting tablecloths, etc.), and will be so grateful for your help. The shifts are from approximately 10:00am to 1:00pm; your mash may ask you to serve only part of that shift.
Please do make every effort to participate in your assigned shift, so that the volunteer mashgichim are not scrambling for volunteers.
Of course, if you feel you are unable to serve in the kitchen, for any reason, please let us know and we will make accommodations or remove you from the list.
Please contact Frances Fischer at frances@beth-jacob.org with any questions about this return to our wonderful kitchen tradition.
Sincerely,
Geoff Marshall, VP of Logistics & Kitchen Committee Chair
Frances Fischer, Director of Congregational Programming
