Prime Time Impressions from CEDIA Expo 2022
Immersive, Vibrant, Smart, and Great Sounding
After a series of unexpected events prevented us from sending out The Audio Voice newsletter last week (…following a planned break in the previous week), we have a lot of catch up to do for this one. Particularly, because the past two weeks were extremely rich in announcements, and the break did allow us to get a better perspective on what happened at CEDIA Expo 2022. A lot of news followed that very inspiring show, including the announcement that the Connectivity Standards Alliance had released the much anticipated Matter 1.0 specification.

But let's start with the show. CEDIA Expo 2022, September 29 to October 1, was an extremely good trade show. Strong attendance, very high-quality exhibits, many of them with many new announcements at the show, and a very positive environment for business. Overall, attendance was strong for a post-pandemic show, with visitors clearly in a business mood - not just “tapping on the back” and more "it's good to be back" talk. The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, TX was very suitable, and the city, and most importantly the weather, all helped to create a vibrant and enjoyable experience.
A very strong exhibition, CEDIA Expo 2022 sustained strong visitor traffic all across the 3 days. The CEDIA Conference featured 55 sessions focused on formal training and professional advancement. Industry-leading manufacturers, including Crestron, Legrand AV, Origin Acoustics, SnapOne, Sony and Sound United, among 29 brands, presented more than 100 Manufacturer Product Training (MPT) sessions on their latest products and solutions
CEDIA Expo is now owned by Emerald Expositions, a company with its roots in trade publications that is now dedicated to promoting events and trade shows, and which has naturally suffered like all similar organizations during the pandemic-related cancellations. Following two very challenging years, CEDIA Expo 2022 was a lean but well organized event, basically made successful by exhibitors and attendees. CEDIA, the association, is basically just another exhibitor at its own show and the master of ceremonies of all the training, education, networking, and special events, while the company now simply called Emerald manages the show floor production.

The Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center is a decent facility that lacks glamour from the outside, but is directly connected to the 1,001-room Omni Dallas hotel via a skybridge, which is basically the real front entrance to the convention center. In fact, many listening rooms and business events related to the CEDIA Expo (or not) took place at the Omni hotel - as I found out a bit too late. Just as a curiosity, on February 9, 2022, the Dallas City Council voted to take steps toward demolishing the convention center and replacing it with a new one. So there's that.
CEDIA Expo 2022 featured many new exhibitors in areas such as signal distribution and control systems, many transitioning directly from the commercial installation sectors. The event featured 50 new exhibitors and the highly anticipated return of Crestron. New audio companies such as L-Acoustics and PerListen basically stole the show with the pro-level speaker designs that aim for the best in residential systems and luxury immersive audio
More important is what happened on the show floor. There clearly was a sense of urgency in the way the industry in general embraced the opportunity to be in Dallas for CEDIA Expo 2022, and I have a feeling that Emerald had nothing to do with that. In fact, many of the trade shows sometimes are great events not because the promoters did anything special, but just because there really is a strong need from companies and people to do business. And after two years of postponed projects, Zoom calls, and virtual meetings, everyone was ready for that.

The custom integration sector, as the CEDIA space is characterized, was always a strong market in North-America and is slightly different elsewhere, where system integrators tend to combine commercial and residential, and there's a strong crossover with the hi-fi and consumer electronics dealerships that also do installations. In fact, when I returned from the 2019 CEDIA Expo, which coincided with the same week of the now defunct Rocky Mountain Audio Fest, I couldn't help thinking about why wouldn't more hi-fi and high-end audio companies exhibit at CEDIA? While hi-fi shows are intended to appeal mainly to potential buyers and end users who visit the show rooms to listen and buy, the CEDIA show is an ideal space for that channel - dealers, reps, and distributors - as well as the always crucial installers, which are a natural and essential extension for great home audio.

But CEDIA Expo, as I have highlighted previously, is now also increasingly a converging event toward the smart home. While installation, home theater, and even outdoor systems are still the core of the audio exhibits at CEDIA Expo, side by side with the screens, displays, and projector companies, the new exhibitors are increasingly selling lighting, energy management, security, motorized blinders and shaders, and anything that can be remotely controlled in the "smart home". And increasingly, there's now Google, Amazon, Sonos, and a series of new technology companies invested in dominating the space through new forms of remote control ecosystems. Amazon alone had four different exhibits for all its technology brands, that I could count.
Origin Acoustics was the busiest audio exhibitor with impressive demonstrations of its latest Ambisonic Systems products - pro audio level and outdoor landscape solutions - an expanded range of installation loudspeakers, the relaunch of the renowned subwoofer brand Velodyne Acoustics, and expanded partnerships with many brands that Origin carries for the US market, including Audio Control, Artnovion, Amina Sound, and others.
To get a sense of how vibrant this show was I looked for the official figures, and I was happy to see that Emerald finally revealed the final figures for CEDIA Expo 2022 this week. Those confirmed 15,497 total registrants with a verified attendance of 11,946 industry professionals and 317 exhibitors. It's irrelevant to compare this with previous editions, given how much has changed with the industry and the scope of the show. More important, is that over 40% were first-time attendees, which speaks volumes.

And that gives me a great segue for my take-aways from CEDIA 2022. First, there is a latent "other" show that Emerald needs to know about and accommodate in its plans. A show such as CEDIA Expo is not only about the suppliers that sell gear to custom integrators and installers. It's also about all the technology suppliers and OEM manufacturers that deliver solutions to those companies and brands represented in the largest booths. Not surprisingly, many of the small booths at CEDIA Expo 2022 were from that segment, including WiSA Technologies, a presence by engineering house StreamUnlimited, and a welcome combined booth from LibreWireless and Hangsong, among other specialized suppliers.

I could imagine speaker driver companies such as LaVoce, Morel, Beyma, Radian, SB Acoustics/SB Audience, or even SEAS benefiting from exhibiting at this show. And in fact many were walking the show floor.

Exactly like at CES, Mobile World Congress, and other much bigger trade shows, a large percentage of the visitors and business done is B2B. Meaning, companies that supply products, technologies, and services to the consumer-facing, or end-user-facing brands and companies. At CEDIA Expo 2022, I was pleasantly surprised to find visitors from all over the world that were in Dallas to talk to their customers, the exhibitors - in most cases, for the fist time in-person after almost 3 years! Many of these B2B visitors told me that they regretted not having set up a booth or a business suite. Something that is bound to change in the 2023 edition of CEDIA Expo, returning to Denver, CO (September 7-9, 2023).
The Theory Audio Design and Pro Audio Technology booth and demo theater had an impressive array of audio products, with Theory previewing its first architectural subwoofer models, new IP amplifier/controllers, while Pro Audio Technology (PRO) introduced the SR-2408iw versatile in-wall and aimable loudspeaker and the extremely impressive SR-28212ai loudspeaker, which stole the show and received all the possible awards, offering full-range performance, variable coverage waveguides, and built-in subwoofers.
The Absolute Ultimate AV demonstration combining Christie Digital, Steinway Lyngdorf, and Spatial, among many other brands, was an extremely popular presentation with cutting-edge technology. Spatial took care of the very special processing of the space, converting all signals, from Dolby Atmos, to its own very special object-based spatial environments streamed from the cloud to the theater.
This photo was taken just before the show closed. The McIntosh-powered Home Theater presentation, featuring 19 McIntosh amplifiers (14,000W) to power to an immersive 11.12.6 home theater system with technology supplied also by Trinnov Audio (29 channels of audio processing and room optimization), Sonus faber (17 loudspeakers and 12 subwoofers), Officina Acustica (room design and construction), madVR Labs and Kaleidescape created the highest level of immersive sound and vision at the show.
Uncertainly Optimistic
My second take of this show has to do with the macroeconomic environment. Although we all continue to read news and forecasts of a likely recession, extraordinary inflation, and the threat of more geopolitical instability, I remain optimistic about our industry.

No matter the efforts by the Federal Reserve to tame inflation by raising interest rates, the feeling I got from the activity I saw at this show clearly indicates that we are facing very different circumstances that might not fit precisely with that plan. The visitors to CEDIA, the professionals that do residential installation and integration, are all reporting strong demand and just regretting the lack of enough specialized labor to support existing projects. Many smaller business owners in the custom integration are doing what they can with smaller teams, while the largest organizations are hiring everyone they can find that can solder a cable or tell an HDMI from an RCA.

And as the smart home industry progresses, and installations run over Ethernet and wireless systems, the CEDIA space is requiring increasingly more IT-savvy staff, which is already highly sought-after by many other higher-paying, and less physically demanding market segments in a record-low unemployment market.

All this, while manufacturers continue to struggle with supply chain constraints, increasing costs in shipping, and scarcity and raising prices of materials. What all this boils down to is very difficult to say.

We just had a global pandemic of major proportions that is still affecting countries and economies and now we have war, inflation, and a disruption of the global manufacturing and supply chain we relied upon for decades. And yet, there's plenty of work and jobs, and everyone just wants to move on with their lives, remain connected, and get a new home theater for their homes.

As CEDIA Expo 2022 served to show, vaccines are effective and made it possible to return to travel and in-person events. Everyone wants to drive businesses forward leveraging opportunities and lessons learned from the pandemic. Residential technology integration, design, and construction professionals know they have plenty of projects at hand, and that demand is strong. They just need to hire and train more staff to take on those projects.
Amazon was in force at CEDIA Expo 2022, including a booth promoting its range of smart speakers and smart displays, essentially demonstrating the strong integration in home networks for all smart home applications. Showing how Wi-Fi and home networks are increasingly important for the residential integration space, Amazon had a dedicated booth to promote its eero PoE Gateway solutions for installers. Those are high-performance wired gateways that support speeds up to 10 Gbps with two 10 gigabits (GbE) ports and eight PoE-enabled 2.5 GbE ports. The eero PoE 6 powers a range of PoE devices like access points and security cameras with an available 100W of PoE power output when used with the 140W eero power adapter.
Things that Matter
Technology-wise there were a lot of important trends to note at the different CEDIA Expo exhibits, most of which I have been highlighting in audioXpress magazine’s Market Updates (which come free, included with the subscription, unlike many poor market reports that loosely copy information and are sold for thousands of dollars). As expected, there were some new PoE++ products, which make complete sense for residential installations. Also as noted previously, network cabling is fast becoming a standard whenever distributed audio and multiple zones are required. I was pleasantly surprised to see many manufacturers discussing the merits of Dante or even AES67, which in this market the companies prefer because it can be combined with any of the many types of control solutions for the residential market. And, among the control companies and smart home exhibitors there were clear references to Matter.

And talking about Matter, what I was not expecting was that the new Matter 1.0 standard would be announced just four days after the CEDIA Expo. They probably weren’t even aware of the trade show, since the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announcement basically only uses the outdated terminology of Internet of Things (IoT) and doesn't even mention Smart Home, which is the obvious main application. It was refreshing to see that in the CEDIA space no one even considers naming connected systems as "things" - not even Google. Clearly, these organizations that continue to insist on the IoT "thing" need to refine their language and understanding of consumers. No consumer actually understands or likes “IoT”.
AVA was an interesting company exhibiting at CEDIA Expo 2022.
The Swiss-American manufacturer of connected home products, created by the founders of NEEO and former Control4 executives, has now partnered with Josh.ai to launch voice integration for its Android-based touchscreen AVA Remote. On the home audio front, the company is now using network players/streamers from Swedish company Primare, which is a very interesting development. The full suite of AVA solutions, designed exclusively for the professional channel, was on display at CEDIA Expo. I was not very impressed by the AVA speaker though.
Essentially, Matter 1.0 is a great incentive for future market applications and innovation in the smart home, with a solid promise of improved consumer experiences. No manufacturer of connected systems can ignore the new open standard and the benefits of Matter-certified products. But in the CEDIA space, Matter could very quickly become a powerful driving force. Audio manufacturers cannot ignore the impact for smart home solutions.

Apart from the obvious control and automation perspective, this will be key and a requirement for any media devices because of energy efficiency/management, and the ability to leverage external sensors, including microphones for voice control, calibration, and more. Matter will be a big incentive towards smart home system engagement.

So, if it is not already the case, in the next project that requires a wireless Bluetooth/Wi-Fi SoC, product developers should consider one of the many Matter-ready devices already available that also support Thread as a foundation for that integration. There's already several of these solutions available and I am certain many more will be announced at the forthcoming electronica 2022 in Munich, and CES 2023 events.

Designing with Matter support is a great way to prepare for the uncertainty of times ahead.
Lithe Audio was a major winner at CEDIA Expo 2022, with its new iO1 all-in-one IP66 wireless indoor and outdoor speaker. But more important was the impact caused by the British company in its North-American debut, showcasing its range of active installation speakers, with vast wired and wireless connectivity options and the option and convenience of PoE++ module (pictured). The Lithe Audio iO1, as with other speakers from the company, support both Bluetooth 5.0 and 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, with embedded AirPlay 2 and Chromecast technologies, ready for distributed audio systems
Showcasing a solid example of what installation audio amplifiers look like these days, Australian brand Blustream introduced the new Dante NPA70 compact two-channel amp with PoE++, shipping now. This networked audio zone amplifier delivers advanced audio integration, featuring 2x 35W (1x 70W mono) or 70V/100V high-level constant voltage output and Dante audio integration. It can be powered via PoE++ from a compatible network switch, or locally. The unit also includes the ability to lower the amplifier power output subject to PoE capabilities; support for combined or independent LAN and Dante connections; DSP with a 31-band EQ; audio delay for lip sync correction; and control via front panel, IR, RS-232, TCP/IP, web GUI, or 12V trigger. Blustream exhibited for the first time at CEDIA Expo with its range of signal distribution solutions for both residential and commercial applications on display. The company also states it has all products in stock and ready to ship.
The Wireless Speaker and Audio Association (WiSA) was again a dominating force at CEDIA Expo 2022, where all the display companies and Bang & Olufsen, Dynaudio, Savant and Lithe Audio, promoted WiSA HT certified solutions. While most of the CEDIA heavyweights showcased million-dollar flagship home theater systems, the reality is many integrators will likely be working with WiSA as part of the more common residential projects.
From smart streaming amplifier plates and boards for all audio products to advanced voice interface solutions, StreamUnlimited was one of the busy B2B suppliers that greatly benefited from a presence at the show. Now with an expanded presence in the US, StreamUnlimited is rapidly expanding its range of solutions to address the smart home segment and networked products, in parallel to multiroom music streaming, high resolution audio and Dolby Atmos home theatre setups.
