Welcome Watershed Stewards!

Each year, NLRA recruits AmeriCorps members to serve as NLRA's Watershed Stewards from May-October. They provide hands-on conservation support that boosts our capacity to protect the

Newfound Watershed.

Throughout the summer you will see Antoni, Sawyer, and Isabella leading guided adventures at Grey Rocks Conservation Area, collecting water samples from the lake and its tributaries, installing stormwater management projects to protect Newfound from pollution, and more. Follow along with their efforts in their bimonthly entries in the Stewardship Journal. Here's Isabella's account of their first weeks:

Maintain Your Boat and a Healthy Lake

Poor boat maintenance can have a negative impact on water quality, plants and animals, and shoreline stability. Here's our tips to keep your boat and Newfound Lake in tip-top condition:

  1. Fuel your boat, not the fish. Whether fueling up at the gas dock or on the go, use a funnel or spout with an automatic stop device to prevent overfilling and spilling, and an absorbent pad to catch splash-back and drips. Pollution from spilled gas is toxic to aquatic life and lowers water quality.
  2. Wash away from water. Avoid spreading invasive species and contaminating the lake with pollutants by washing your boat away from surface waters or storm drains. Cleaning, draining, and drying your boat between trips is our best protection from harmful invasive species!
  3. Go slow within 150 feet of shoreline. It's the law! And it also protects shorelines from erosion, in turn keeping our water clean and clear.

Make a donation - of your time!

The water quality monitoring season has started, and we are facing a shortage of volunteers! Water quality monitoring is critical to our work, helping us identify pollution issues and informing conservation efforts.

For only a few hours per month, you can help protect our clean, clear water. Use it as an excuse to take your boat out as a lake monitor, or visit Newfound's beautiful streams and rivers as a tributary monitor.

Sign up to volunteer or send questions to Paul@NewfoundLake.org.
