September 2 - September 11, 2022
|
|
I saw a silly news feature this week about when autumn begins. Meteorological autumn began on September 1; astronomical fall is still some ways off, beginning on the fall equinox September 22; cultural autumn will begin the day after Labor Day; a national coffee chain began selling pumpkin spice products last week and a few intrepid stores have had Halloween decorations out for a fortnight; real college football starts this weekend; we’re a month into the public school year and it will still be “shorts weather” for a couple more months. The start of fall is subjective and staggered.
The start of fall programming at the church is also a little staggered. We’ve had a rollicking start to our Sunday programming for the last few weeks and now we’re poised to begin more mid-week activities. I want to call your attention to these mid-week opportunities that begin the week of Labor Day.
On Tuesday night (7:30 by zoom) we begin the first of our book studies for the year, Being Disciples by Rowan Williams. It’s a short, beautiful, rich book and I hope you’ll grab a copy on Sunday and join us Tuesday night—this study runs each week through October 11. Then on Thursday we begin a new mid-week Eucharist and noon lunch bible study. A laidback Eucharist will start in the Chapel at 11:30, followed immediately by a noon bible study with provided lunch, using the book We Make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. We’re committed to trying this for six weeks, and hope that it will take and become a staple. These two Thursday events feed into each other but are also independent, so come to what you can.
In addition to all this, of course, we still have our Men’s Monthly Meal on Wednesday night, you can end your Thursday with meditative prayer at Sit and Wait in the Chapel from 7:00 to 8:00, and the Oktoberfest fundraiser is right around the corner. Then we’ll be racing (get it) towards our Ironman hospitality. We’re a busy church, but the busy-ness is never the point. We are doing so much together—learning and praying and serving and singing and celebrating—because the Christian life is meant to be lived together. Discipleship is a shared endeavor. Let’s do it together.

Sunday Forum
Sundays 9:30 AM, Berlin Room
|
Join us as we continue our fall formation series on 1 Corinthians. Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians shows Paul trying to pastor a young, gifted, divided church from afar. Drawing on some of the leading commentators on Paul, we’ll read together to see how he addressed problems and promise in Corinth, and how this might apply to us today. If you’re both talented and imperfect, or belong to a community that is talented and imperfect, this bible study is for you.

From Rowan Williams, introduction to Being Disciples: “What we do, how we think and speak and act, how we grow in depth of relation with each other and God…I hope very much that [the topics in this book] may be a starting point for…growing in the life that Jesus shares with us so that we can become signs of life and hope in the world.”
Books are available in the Narthex Sunday and in the parish office during the week ($10 donation). Please sign up below to register for the class and for a book.

Brown Bag Bible Study
Thursdays, 12 Noon, Beginning September 8
Tyler Hall
|
Join us for lunch and a Bible study – we've made it easy!
Gather in Tyler Hall for a light lunch and a “no homework” weekly Bible study based on lessons from Brian McLaren’s We Make the Road by Walking. (This book is available on Amazon and other outlets but is not required for our study.)
McLaren’s teachings, which follow the liturgical calendar, offer new insights on “aliveness” in Christian living. Those new and not-so-new to the Christian walk can discover the beauty and joys of forging our journeys together.
You may bring your own lunch or share in the meal provided. (A lunch RSVP is required by midnight Tuesday.) Donations are requested to cover the cost of lunch each week.
The menu for September 8 will be a quinoa salad with grilled chicken and chopped veggies, bread and butter, banana pudding, tea and water.
Please use this link to sign up so we can prepare accordingly.
