MOLLY BARKER, FOUNDER OF GIRLS ON THE RUN INTERNATIONAL: HOW TO LIVE A BIG, UNAPOLOGETIC LIFE THROUGH LIFE'S LESSONS
Last month, after photographing two Girls on the Run events, we reached out to Molly Barker, the founder of International event. Molly founded the organization in 1996 with thirteen girls in Charlotte, NC. Since then, thanks to thousands of volunteers, supporters and staff, the organization has expanded to every state in the US and has served over 2.25 million girls.
Since leaving the organization in 2013, Molly has gone on to do lots of things. She has worked on Capitol Hill, traveled across the country listening to people share their stories, wrote some books, founded another organization that teaches the art of profound listening, advocated (and still does) for people experiencing home and food insecurity, and launched two awesome kids.
We caught up with Molly and asked her to contribute her thoughts to run alongside our photos. She emphatically said, "I would be honored!" *This story was originally schedule for June, but the weekend it was due, Molly went down with covid so we are bringing it to you in July!

Grand Haven Triathlon is definitely one of the most scenic events that you'll ever do. Coming at you in its 19th year, we promise that this one won't disappoint. Swim along the shoreline of the Grand Haven State Park beach in the big pond (aka Lake Michigan.) Bike a scenic and gorgeous course. Then enjoy an out and back run on the boardwalk along the riverfront. After your epic finish, take part in a post race picnic with Subway sandwiches and "Dutch" chocolate milk provided by Country Dairy and check out the custom awards presentation. Make a day of it. Race and then hit up the beaches at this great getaway West Michigan local triathlon. There is still time to enter!

RUNGR's 2023 MAGIC OF THE MILE

Time to lace up the shoes and head to the track with RunGR for the 2023 Magic of the Mile! RunGR will again be back at Grand Rapids Christian's Eagle Stadium, which will be open and FREE for spectators to cheer everyone on. They also have day of registration, online and onsite (cash, check, or credit card).
The Magic of the Mile will be chip timed. They used last year's data to adjust the heats and add an additional heat for both genders. They are watching registrations to keep the starting line a nice field size. This year's Mile is a part of the Michigan Runner's Series and the Road Runners Club of America Michigan 2023 Championship Series event.
As in the past, their Youth 200 Meter/400 Meter & Youth Coed Mile are FREE for future track stars to go out and have FUN! It is also FREE for spectators. Anyone who is 20 or younger on race day will automatically receive a $10 entry when they register.

RUNGR's CROSS COUNTRY TEAM CHALLENGE

Running IS a team sport and RunGR's Cross Country Team Challenge allows you and four of your friends to experience it all together. This event resembles a high school-style cross country meet, using standard scoring and a 5K course. This is a team event, with 5 to 7 people per team. If you don't have a team or enough people to make an entire team, let them know on the reg form and they will help you put a team together.
This year they are trying out a new course & venue at Richmond Park in the City of Grand Rapids. The 5K course will feature mowed grass, packed dirt, and gravel. Be sure to check out the course preview video below to get an idea of what XC running looks like! Also new this year is the FREE community 1 Mile Run, which is open to both youth & adults.

The Dog Days of summer have arrived and we're in the thick of it - literally. Other than the smoke-filled skies, we are loving summer and it has been great seeing so many of our racing friends out there this season. We're heading into another busy month and July is looking to be the craziest yet so look for us out there covering your running, triathlon and gravel triathlon too. Haven't done a gravel triathlon before, you should. They are a blast!
Our Hard Sell: If you are a race director, you already recognize that photography from your event is more than taking participant pictures; it's about telling a story on race day. It's important to your athletes to have pictures documenting their accomplishments, and it's crucial to your marketing strategy for promoting your event next year. Also important is how you use photos, video and other content which helps your event standout in the noisy newsfeeds that exists inside the social media sphere. We can help with that too.
