The Momental Foundation welcomes applications to the Mistletoe Research Fellowship for the 2023-2024 academic year!


This unique career and funding opportunity for postdoctoral scholars and PhD Candidates combines $10,000 in unrestricted research funding with professional development training via a remote collaboration program with social entrepreneurs.

The 2023 application window is short - please don't hesitate to seize the opportunity! Request your faculty recommendations as early as possible to ensure the best chance of winning a $10,000 fellowship.  MRF Awardees receive their funding by mid-September - available to use immediately.


All Mistletoe Research Fellows participate in two programs (see below) designed to build valuable project management and communication skills that will set them up to succeed and engage effectively with outside collaborators, whether they seek to pursue careers in industry or to remain in academia:


The Unfettered Research Grant

Provides fellowship recipients with USD $10,000 of unrestricted research funding that can be applied to almost any university-approved and research-related activity, including conference travel!


The MRF Startup Collaboration

An extracurricular professional training program where Research Fellows join remote interdisciplinary "MRF Teams" and learn to apply their scholarship and expertise to help startups to advance frontier technologies with high social impact & humanitarian potential.  


Accepted fellows attend a required three-day onboarding Match Workshop where they connect to their fellowship cohort, meet MRF Startups and match to their MRF Team.

  • MRF In-Person Match Workshop (California TBD, Nov 3-6, 2023). Travel & accommodation will be covered. Details provided in fellowship acceptance packages.

In 2023, the Momental Foundation will award up to 36 competitive fellowship opportunities to scholars at our R1 partner universities in the U.S. and Singapore. Postdoc participants must remain full-time employees through the 2023-2024 academic calendar year. PhD candidates must be "all but dissertation" and maintain full-time student status with stipend support through the 2023-2024 academic calendar year. The Mistletoe Research Fellowships are open to most STEM fields and limited fields of Quantitative Social Science (please check the FAQ for clarification).


These fields broadly include:

Engineering, Life Sciences, Health Science, Environmental Studies / Ecology / Earth Sciences, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Statistics / Data Science / Informatics,

Computer Science, and Experimental Psychology

Each application is reviewed by two or more selection committee readers and evaluated on research potential and innovation, aptitude for team-based collaboration, and interest in entrepreneurship or community/humanitarian projects.
