Housing costs continue to strain U.S. households’ financial circumstances and recovery from the pandemic. To this end, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is working to raise awareness of the Department of the Treasury’s Emergency Rental Assistance (ERA) program. Billions of dollars are available through state, local, and tribal government agencies, providing emergency rental assistance to qualifying households.
As community-based consumer financial service providers, we at Your Exchange feel we play a vital role in helping our customers make ends meet. We pride ourselves in knowing our customers, the challenges they face, and being there for them. With this in mind, just as with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) information on economic impact payments earlier this year,we encourage you to review the resources available from the CFPB and consider sharing them with others who may be in need of assistance.
To help learn about and access rental relief, the CFPB has established a Rental Assistance Finder, where renters can search for aid based on where they live. The assistance can be used to cover rent, utilities, and other housing costs that came due during the COVID-19 pandemic, including:
Reasonable late fees (if not included in your rental or utility debt),
Internet service to the home, and
Moving expenses and other rental-related fees (such as security deposits, application fees, or screening fees) for families who have to move.
