WA CARES Fund Collection Begins July 1

The state will begin to collect a payroll tax of 0.58% on July 1 to help Washingtonians afford care and accommodations they’ll require with age.

The Washington Cares Fund established a maximum $36,500 benefit for qualified Washingtonians to help pay for a variety of seniors’ needs, including long-term care. The benefit may also be applied towards transportation, mobility equipment, meal deliveries, home accessibility improvements, and even family caretaker compensation.

The Washington Cares Fund is not a long-term care plan for seniors, but some say it’s starting to be recognized as a valuable safety net that most Washingtonians will someday be cushioned by.

Employee Retention Credit Scams

The IRS is urging people to beware of ads that promise big money by claiming the Employee Retention Tax Credit. (ERC or ERTC)

While this IS a real tax credit, scammers are taking advantage of businesses by falsifying eligibility requirements, collecting personal information and charging "fees" to claim the credit.

Advertisements for "ERC/ERTC help" are all over the radio, TV and social media. You may even get ads that look like official government letters, or texts, emails and phone calls advertising ERC/ERTC eligibility.

The scammers advise you that they can determine your eligibility within minutes, before even discussing your tax situation and then encourage you to "apply" for the credit, even if you do not qualify. Leaving you at risk of someone using the tax credit as a ploy to steal your identity or take a cut of your improperly claimed credit.

Many also take upfront "fees" from you to be able to apply for and claim the credit, some even charging a percentage of the suggested "refund amount".

Statements from the scammer urge you submit the claim "because there is nothing to lose". In reality, those who are improperly receiving the credit will have to repay the credit, along with substantial interest and penalties.

The only way to claim the ERC is on a federal employment tax return. For eligibility information and information on how to properly claim the Employee Retention Tax Credit, visit the IRS Website here.

Rep. Kilmer Announces Grant to Replace Breakwater in Port Orchard
U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer announced June 22nd, that the Port of Bremerton has been awarded a $9.4 million RAISE Discretionary Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the replacement of the public breakwater along the Port Orchard waterfront.

Among it's multitude of assets, the 48 year-old existing breakwater plays a vital role in protecting the only saltwater fueling station within a 16-nautical-mile radius. But at more than 20 years past it's intended lifespan, it is now damaged and at risk of failure, posing a significant threat to the Port Orchard Marina.

“The Port Orchard Marina Breakwater Replacement project is high priority for the Port of Bremerton due to concerns about the age and safety of the current infrastructure,” said Axel Strakeljahn, President, Board of Commissioners, Port of Bremerton. “It provides so many services to our community – moorage for tribal fishing, protection from weather for Kitsap Transit, for SAFE Boats International production, economic security for the City of Port Orchard, and supports numerous businesses, first responders, liveaboard vessels, and continued recreation for Sinclair Inlet. As it is at risk of failure, federal funding is paramount for its replacement, and we are grateful to Rep. Kilmer for his continued efforts to support our project and our community.”

The $9.4 million federal investment will facilitate a complete replacement of the aging breakwater, ensuring the continued operation and safety of the marina.
