From Fr. Mike

On Tuesday, we celebrate the 4th of July. I want to start this bulletin with a reminder and prayer for our country:

On this Independence Day, we are reminded of all those who have sacrificed for my freedom, following the example of your Son, Jesus Christ. Let me not take my freedom, both physical and spiritual, for granted. May I always remember that my freedom was purchased at a very high price, costing others their lives. Lord, today bless those who have served and those who will give their life for my freedom. With favor and bounty, meet their needs and watch over their families.

The office will be closed on the 4th of July and will reopen on Wednesday July 5th.

Our New Music Director & Associate Priest

Welcome to Kathryn Flynn, our new Music Director. If you have a chance over the next few weeks, stop by the piano and say hello.

As I am writing this, I think Fr. Paul Adaja will also be here, please make sure you welcome him as well. In the next bulletin we will have some biographies of our new staff.

Summer Mission Appeal

On July 8 and 9, we have the Summer Mission Appeal. Each year, every parish in the Archdiocese hosts a speaker on behalf of a missionary group during the summer months.

This year, we welcome Father Benedict Lumen, representing the Brothers of Charles Lwanga. The proceeds from the Summer Appeal make possible the continued work of the church in all parts of the world. Please be as generous as possible.

Fireside Chats RETURN

The first fireside chat of the summer will be on Wednesday, July 19 from 7:00-8:30 pm between the church building and Ministry Center.

Gender issues have become a very public discussion. The Peace and Justice Ministry would like to have a conversation with sensitivity so that we can better understand this issue.

The speaker at this discussion is Stephani Clark, a lesbian and transgender woman who is a well-known advocate for culturally-competent care training for all medical professionals throughout Illinois and a member of Howard Brown and Equality Illinois' advisory boards.

Attendees are asked to review the suggested readings and to be mindful of the rules of engagement. Both are outlined below.

Fireside Covenant

As we engage in conversation, please observe the following:

  • Confidentiality - What's said here, stays here.
  • No preaching - We speak from our personal experiences, we are not here to judge, we avoid saying "we should" or "you should".
  • No cross talk - We listen in silence while others are speaking. We do not comment or ask questions about what others say.
  • Respect time - Our gathering is 90 minutes. Please respect time so we can all share.
  • All are asked to share - by coming to this gathering, you agree to participate in some way. Even if it's just your name, we ask you to share something.

Readings Linked Below (both from America: The Jesuit Review)

Bring your own lawn chair, a beverage of your choice, and snacks to share, if you choose.

Join our Parish Composting Program

All are welcome to be a part of our parish composting program! Those who join are welcome to use the parish’s compost tumbler, a user-friendly option that will produce compost at a quicker pace.

This year, we request that composters make sure that they only add small and chopped up waste—not whole banana peels, large slices of watermelon, etc.

This is because if we want to have compost product this summer, then we need to insert chopped up pieces into the composter or it will be years before it degrades.

If you are interested in joining our composting program, please reach out to our new compost garden coordinators, Andrea and Guy Banicki, at anbanicki@gmail.com or gbanick@ilstu.edu for information about the fee.

Participants this summer can use their own compost buckets.

Growing in Faith

This reflection comes from long-time parishioner, Jean Sweeney, who recently “blew out” 92 candles on her birthday cake! Jean has been a bright ray of sunshine, as well as a great “Wisdom Woman” to so many! ~ Nancy Bujnowski

Catholics around the world celebrate the birth of John the Baptist on June 24th. This feast day is special for me! In June of 1931, I came into the world unexpectedly; “preemies” were at greater risk than they are today. The hospital chaplain said “We need to baptize this baby now!”

My mother, alone in her room, asked for a church calendar, and found the closest saint near that day. So, Jean, French for John, became my name, and John the Baptist, in any language, became my patron saint!

In Advent, we listen to John the Baptist when he assures us that we have the power to change our lives, our prejudices, our beliefs, our actions.

We can stop dismissing others and repent.

He knew the Creator God wanted us to love everyone. We all need each other despite of our hugely different ideas and actions. God, loving each of us completely and unceasingly, wants us to love one another no matter how different we are. This can be hard since hatred, intolerance, and prejudice are pervasive in today's world. Jesus showed us in his life that all humans deserve to be accepted and respected.

We are called to love one another. Remember what John said: “Prepare the Way of the Lord”!
