Hello Salmon Bay Families!
I am completing my third week at Salmon Bay. I am enjoying meeting and getting to know many of you! Please do continue to introduce yourselves and also continue to forgive if I don’t get your name right. I want to and I am trying.

Field Trips:    Our students have been busy! Our teachers and staff are off to a great start and we have much to be proud of! Recently our students were engaged in several camping and field trip opportunities. Students and adults attending came back more acquainted and ready to move forward with a successful school year.

Of particular note is our 5th grade field trip. They went on a sailing trip and saw orcas! Not only did they see orcas, but they were also swimming around the ship and underneath as well! How exciting and what a life experience!

Elementary Curriculum Night:    Our elementary Curriculum night had a great turnout! Parents and teachers were able to get clarity regarding teaching and learning expectations and we were even fortunate to have free books from Discover  for our students. Thank you parents/guardians for your attendance! We loved seeing you here!

Pizza on the Playground: “Pizza in the Park” was a blast! Fresh pizza made and delivered on site from Veraci pizza. It doesn’t get better than that! The pizza was delicious and the event well-attended. Thank you FOSB for another great opportunity to meet and greet and raise some funds to support our school.

Friday Sing:    Friday sing is still going strong. We even had our principal Ms. Dixon lead the school singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game!” Go Mariners! We are in the play-offs?

PEN Visitors: (Progressive Educator Network) Today we were honored by the presence of a group of PEN members. They were constituents from different parts of the country and they came to visit Salmon Bay K-8! They were impressed with SB and found the students and staff to be welcoming. The classroom instruction and student engagement they observed resonated in a highly positive manner. Yay Salmon Bay!

Help Please!
Playground/Classroom: We are doing our part to speak with students when they engage in behavior that is not safe or hurtful to others. We need your help at home to remind students to be careful and considerate of their actions at school. To be specific, we have asked students to cease playing tag, inappropriate use of playground equipment, spreading rumors and being unkind. With regard to playing tag, it gets out of hand and becomes rough and hurtful play. Playground equipment is safe as long as students are not trying to climb and leap from areas of height.

Malicious, hurtful rumors especially among our Middle School students have been the catalyst to “pushing buttons” for some of our students. We want to encourage empathy, kindness and accountability. We are family at Salmon Bay K-8.

Lunchroom: Please remind your child to be respectful of lunchroom expectations. Students are to remain in their seats and to raise their hand if they need to go to the restroom, get water or need assistance. Voice level is to be an “inside voice”. A huge thank you to our volunteers who assist in the lunchroom!

All for now,
Evie Taylor
Assistant Principal
Seen at Salmon Bay
Sailing the Sound
This past week, our 5th grade students raised the 2nd biggest main sail on the west coast. Meghan's class sailed aboard The Adventuress on September 29th. Marian and Nicolette's class sailed October 4th and were fortunate enough to see Orcas! Teacher Megan shared this about her first class sailing trip,
"It was a joy to watch our group pull together in rhythm, watch seals play, learn more about marine science, and bond with each other." If you see a 5th grade student, ask them about their class sailing field trip. A big thank you to volunteer chaperones from both classes for supporting our Salmon Bay students!
Bike Week at Salmon Bay
Just in time for Walk & Roll to School Day (October 12th), elementary students have been practicing their bike riding skills over the past two weeks. In partnership with Cascade Bicycle Club, SPS's Let’s Go Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program will teach bicycling and walking safety skills to over 10,000 students this year. The curriculum is delivered at participating schools by physical education teachers.

At Salmon Bay, Mr. G has been working with students during the past two weeks to increase their bicycle riding skills, learn the "rules of the road", the importance of proper clothing and safety equipment, and how to tell if your helmet fits properly, etc.

Thank you to everyone who supported this program by helping their student bring a helmet and bike to school.

*Please see the announcement below about Walk & Roll to School day on October 12th.
Middle School Curriculum Night
October 12th, 6:30 - 8 pm
Please note the new date and time!
Everyone will begin the evening by gathering in the cafeteria. Parents/ guardians will have an opportunity to follow their student's schedule throughout the evening, visiting with each teacher. Information will also be shared about the Winter Enrichment Program (WEP), important policies, student led conferences as well as important school resources and tools. We hope you can join us!

K-5 Enrichment Fee
During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee in the beginning of the school year. This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee). It allows our teachers the opportunity to choose the programs, projects and events that can best enhance their curriculum and excite their class.
Our elementary enrichment fee is $100 per student.

We have an online payment system (SchoolPay) that allows you to easily make and track payments throughout the year. You can reach the new payment portal by logging in to your student’s SPS Source account. Click here for instructions on how to access your student’s Source account and the SchoolPay system. Once you are logged in the Source, navigate to SchoolPay using the menu on the left side of your screen. This SchoolPay flier may also be helpful.

We ask that all enrichment fees be paid by October 14th. Scholarship funds are available. To request a scholarship, please contact Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator, Brittni Zackery, Counselor or Rob Bright, Counselor. Contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome. You may add a scholarship donation to your online SchoolPay shopping cart.

If you have any questions about enrichment fees, camp fees or scholarships, please email Jodi at jrrussell@seattleschools.org

Sister Schools Supply Drive
Our 7th and 8th grade Fall Connections activities emphasize community, both locally and abroad. This week students had an opportunity to learn about Sister Schools and how they partner with communities in Uganda. Sister Schools provides students with an opportunity to engage in personal philanthropy by donating supplies for children in need. This effort is supported by Salmon Bay teachers but organized and led by students in their middle school homerooms. Participation in the supply drive is optional and all interested families are invited to participate. Individuals wishing to donate should bring items to school by October 12th. Learn more about needed items here.
Hello Families,
Putting Books on Hold: As we move into school routines know that if your child forgets their library book, they can still put one on “hold”. I will keep the book in the library until Friday, (or Monday if your child has library on a Friday). Students can come up on their own to check out once they have brought back their books. Students cannot check out more books until they have returned what is on their account. Older students can also put books on hold through Destiny. They will be taught how to do this.

Terrarium in the Library:  Students may have been coming home talking about the terrarium in the library. I have a very large tank in the library that I intend using for a “library pet”. I am thinking hard about this because I cannot house any more pets at my house! 😊 If you are interested in helping me with getting a lizard, (type is undetermined) caring for it and taking it home during school breaks, please let me know. I think this would be so great for the students, so please reach out if you can lend a hand! The tank is probably best suited for a bearded dragon.

Global Reading Challenge for 4th grade-Volunteers Needed: Each year, I partner with the Seattle Public Library in providing an extra-curricular opportunity for 4th graders at Salmon Bay. This is much like “The Battle of the Books”. It is a fun program where students work in teams to read a collection of handpicked, diverse chapter books from November to January. In February, the students then participate in a game in teams against their peers to see who knows the books the best. We need volunteers to read some of the books, and help students prepare for the challenge. Students meet 1x a week during their lunch, (in the library) to work in their teams with volunteer support from November to January. Please reach out if you can help! It is a super fun opportunity.

In Partnership,
Corinna Wright (Teacher-Librarian)

Volunteer Opportunities
We love to have volunteers support our students in the classroom, on field experiences and during school events. If you are interested in volunteering at Salmon Bay this year, now is the perfect time to complete or update your volunteer paperwork. You can find out more, start a volunteer application or update your volunteer profile online here.

Please note: it can take 1-2 weeks to complete the volunteer forms and receive approval from SPS. By starting the process now, you’ll be all set and ready to go when the next volunteer opportunity comes up. Thank you.

Current Volunteer Opportunities
Front Door Greeter
We are seeking individuals who would like to assist with monitoring our front doors between 8:45 am - 9:30 am weekday mornings. Individuals arriving at school during the day (late students, parents, community members, visitors) ring the doorbell for entry. It would be helpful to our front office team to have a volunteer greeter who could answer the door, invite students to check-in at the office, manage personal item drop-off, etc. Sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4ca8a628a4f85-front1

K-2 Lunch Support
Thank you to the parent volunteers who have been coming in to assist students. Your help is greatly appreciated and helps us meet student needs quickly during a busy time. Next week, K-2 students will be introduced to the salad bar. Parent support will be especially helpful during this time. Sign-up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4ca8a628a4f85-k2lunch

New Faces at Salmon Bay
Laurie Sommerville
Administrative Secretary
I am so happy to be joining the Salmon Bay team as Administrative Secretary. Over the years I’ve held many professional roles, including IT manager, Tech Writer and most recently an Early Childhood educator at Cascadia Elementary. Combined, these experiences should serve me well as I strive to meet the needs of the Salmon Bay community.

Of course, my most important role is that of mother to three now adult children. My daughter Ellie is attending the University of Oregon, my son Oliver is living in Atascadero, California, where he manages a goat-milk ice cream parlor, and my eldest son Parker has just finished his Phd in Organic Chemistry. I am exceedingly proud of each of them.

I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended college in San Diego and moved to Seattle in 1988. A fun fact is that my father’s family came to San Francisco from France having sailed around Cape Horn, arriving in “the city” in 1847.

My hobbies include reading, gardening, travel, tennis and cooking (directly from my garden)! I enjoy working part time at Swanson’s nursery where I get to be around plants in a beautiful setting and around folks who love them! I have two delightful cats named Lexie and Olive. They are hysterical together and move through my home glued at the hip.

I look forward to meeting our students and their families throughout the year. Please don’t hesitate to stop by the office to say hello!
Brian Straub,
Resource Teacher
I am excited to be working as the elementary resource teacher at Salmon Bay this year. I have worked in SPS since 2003. In that time, I have worked in around 80 schools through various jobs (AmeriCorps, Substitute IA, Full-Time IA, Certified Sub, Special Education Teacher). I landed in special education full-time a little more than five years ago. I really enjoy the connections I can make with students through individual and small-group work. Building those connections is essential to earning student trust and supporting them in their educational goals. In my free time, I'm a songwriter and guitar player. I have music online and have had bands that have played out around Seattle. I'm looking forward to my time at Salmon Bay!
Free Weekend Food for Kids
Salmon Bay partners with the Ballard Food Bank to provide weekend food for kids. If you'd like to sign up, you will receive a bag which includes 3
dinners, 2 lunches, 2 breakfasts, and snacks at the end of each school week (on Thursday or Friday). The Food Bank can accommodate dietary
restrictions, cultural needs, or allergies: such as vegetarian, halal, no-nut and more!
There are no income requirements.

To sign-up, email one of our school counselors (Brittni or Rob) or complete this form and return it to school.
After School Programs
The FOSB After School Programs committee is excited to announce the return of programming for this year! We have a few classes starting this session (Oct. 17th -Dec. 16th; no classes Thanksgiving week) and are hoping to have even more offered in the winter session. Because of limited offerings this fall, for now we are limiting class registrations to one class per student.

Full class descriptions, schedule, and cost can be found at the Salmon Bay 6crickets webpage here. Registration will open at 8am on Monday, October 10th, via the 6crickets website above. Scholarships are available - please email the FOSB Treasurers at fosbtreasurer@gmail.com

We will need a parent volunteer to attend each class for the entire session (or two parents to attend half the classes) in order to have these classes run. To volunteer, please fill out this google form: https://forms.gle/XUh3nSVZf4m8CCq57 The parent volunteer will receive one free student space (or half if there are two) for the class they volunteer for, and their student(s) will receive a guaranteed space in the class along with early registration if you fill it out by October 8th.
After School Theater
After School Theatre had their first in-person auditions this week since January of 2020! A huge thank you to all students and families who helped us have a great turn out. If your student is feeling bummed that they didn't hear about it sooner, please reach out to our Program Coordinator Biz Freebairn via email: sbafterschooltheatre@gmail.com. We will do our best to make sure that anyone who wants to be involved gets an opportunity to sign up. Thank you, and hope to see you at a performance soon.
FOSB - Did You Know?
As this is the time of year when families are asked to pay enrichment fees, we have fielded a few questions about how FOSB is involved in funding scholarships.

All students are able to participate in SB programming, regardless of a family’s ability to pay. The partnership that FOSB has with the school is that we pledge to fill the gap between what was collected and what the activities cost the school to host. Historically, and anecdotally, the scholarship rate runs 10-15%.

The FOSB website shares info about our annual budget — explore and you’ll see that we have $21k (about 10% of our budget) budgeted towards supporting our students with scholarships for camp, Winter Enrichment Program (WEP), and after-school program fees this year . You may have noticed that SchoolPay also collects scholarship donations. Is this confusing? YES! Is the scholarship money you may have already donated via SchoolPay appreciated? ABSOLUTELY!

A little additional context might help clarify the picture: Salmon Bay School uses the district’s online payment system, SchoolPay, for activities students participate in during the school day. This is a change from a few years ago when all activity money ran through a FOSB account which simultaneously handled funding scholarships.

If you already donated to scholarships via SchoolPay, should you also donate to FOSB’s Direct Giving campaign launching later this fall?  FOR SURE! Donations to FOSB, a 501(c)3 organization, are tax deductible and are eligible for employer matching. In addition to the money budgeted for student scholarships, we have $185k+ of other spending we do each year in support of our teachers, students, and community. Check it out, ask questions for understanding. What else can we help clarify?

ISO: Volunteers for Direct Giving Campaign
Our Direct Giving campaign will launch in a few weeks and we are looking for committee members to help bring fresh ideas and energy to this important fundraiser. Interested in helping out? Please email Caitlin Collins at fosbchair@gmail.com

Attendance Procedures
If your student is going to be late or absent, please email salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org to notify the school. This email can be accessed by all the people in the office so your student’s attendance will be entered accurately. You can also let teachers know, but the official attendance record must be updated by office staff.

If you need to pick your student up during the day for an appointment, please call the office 5-10 minutes in advance of your arrival. That gives us enough time to call your student, have them gather belongings and walk to the office.

Ballard High School Playmakers present
“The Burial at Thebes”
Ballard High School Playmakers are proud to announce that their live theater season returns! The 2022-2023 season opens with The Burial at Thebes by Nobel Prize-winning playwright Seamus Heaney,
Oct 20, 21, 27, 28, 29 at 7:30 p.m.

In this masterful translation, Heaney exposes the darkness and the humanity in Sophocles' masterpiece Antigone. Sophocles' play explores the conflict between those who affirm the individual's human rights and those in power who are protecting the security of the state.
The Ballard High School production will be set in 2016 during the Women’s March in Washington D.C., bringing Sophocles’ classic drama to the forefront of American politics and the continuing battle for human rights.
All performances are held at the Earl Kelly Center for Performing Arts at Ballard High School, 1418 NW 65th Street, Seattle WA, 98117.

Tickets: $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for students. All seats are reserved. Advance tickets are now available at https://showtix4u.com (search for “Ballard High School.”)
