Last week, Free People kicked off their mentorship program with our Eureka! Explorers cohort. Approximately 30 young women and 16 Free People mentors joined the sessions to learn about fashion, business, and marketing.
But the mentorship doesn't end when the program is complete. In line with Project Accelerate, Girls Inc. programs aim to change the career trajectory for young women by providing networks that support alumnae through college and early career.

Girls Inc. and Ambassador Club alumna, Caelyn Owens, recently accepted a full time position with Free People and shared how her experiences at Girls Inc. shaped her professional growth:
Can you describe your experience as a Girls Inc. participant and alumna?
"At 14-years-old, I was a shy girl looking for a community and space to foster my passion. My older sister recommended that I join Girls Inc., where she was an intern during college. When I participated in my first Girls Inc. meeting, the environment was filled with a diverse group of girls in my age group and inspirational leaders who were eager to share their experience. In that moment, I didn’t feel alone anymore. Although my club members and I had different backgrounds, we found similarities in our experiences. We shared the desire to be a part of a collaborative community where we could explore our ambitions and passions together." Read the full interview here.
We are proud to partner with Free People, who over the past five years have provided not only philanthropic giving but also ongoing mentorship in fitness, mental health, body positivity, and career exploration. Julie Verdugo, Director of Sustainability + Social Impact at Free People and a Girls Inc. Advisory Board member, has been a champion for our partnership with Free People. Julie recently announced that in addition donating 100% of Free People’s Thanksgiving Day FP Movement proceeds to Girls Inc., this year Free People “will also celebrate the pioneering girls of Girls Inc. and the power of mentorship.”

This summer, campers from across the Greater Philadelphia region came together at Drexel University College of Engineering to learn about sustainable cities, building indoor kites, making solar cars, designing roller coasters, health & wellness, and so much more!

Young Women in Construction Camp
During week one, the girls learned about Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from multinational conglomerate company 3M, and visited MED-TEX for fire safety and rope training.
WorkReady participant, Jaya, shared that one of her favorite moments of camp so far was learning about “leavers, ropes, knots, and tools that can help save people’s lives” at MED-TEX.

EGL Disney Camp
This summer, our youngest scholars enjoyed access to even more resources in our brand new literacy lab! Participants strengthened their reading skills and enjoyed activities that incorporated STEM concepts and their favorite Disney characters.
