Hello Theatre Family,
Thank you so much for joining us at the Kick-Off to Chicago Theatre Week. We had an amazing time at Black Ensemble Theater with performances from Young People's Theatre, The Revival, Dances From the Heart at the Athenaeum Theatre, and Broadway in Bronzeville at Harold Washington Cultural Center.
We received two proclamations for Chicago Theatre Week from Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson officially proclaiming February 6-16, 2025 as Chicago Theatre Week in the state and city. Lieutenant Governor Julianna Stratton, DCASE Commissioner Clinée Hedspeth and Interim Director of Choose Chicago Richard Gamble joined us in uplifting the magic of theatre. I hope you are taking advantage of the shows happening during this time.
We are excited to announce Chicago Theatre Week Continued! Taking place on Hot Tix from February 17-23 launching online at hottix.org on February 17th.
I want to encourage everyone who is eligible to apply for the non-profit theatre tax credit. The application opens February 14 and is accepted on a first come, first serve basis. You can learn how to take advantage of this opportunity here.
As we celebrate Black History Month, Maya Angelou’s poem “Human Family” is at the forefront of my mind the last line declaring “We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.” As we face the new challenges being presented to who we are and more narratives are being uplifted to separate us, it is imperative to remember the history of people who despite their differences, despite the laws that separated them, despite the fear of losing their lives, came together time after time through our world history to create a different stage for the future, one they didn’t know if they would be able to enjoy themselves.
As creatives, the stories, pictures, music, and performances we create today will be the anthropology of future generations. What will we discover together?
