Thanksgiving Message from Superintendent Selesnick
Dear KLSD Community,

This year, we have much for which to be thankful. Enormous collective community effort has kept our schools open, five days a week, throughout the fall.

I am lucky enough to be regularly present at each school. Just yesterday, at KES, fifth graders presented to their fourth grade peers on ancient civilizations. First grade writers learned to add detail and quotations to their narratives. Each day, I see our students re-engaged with their peers and teachers in meaningful and relevant learning.

Our athletes have completed successful fall seasons. Our actors, musicians, and singers are about to take the stage in front of live audiences.

In October, we held our first district-wide, in-person learning café in two years. Parents, teachers, and administrators came together in thoughtful conversation about important lessons from pandemic learning. We are already looking towards a second café on the topic of developing ever more inclusive schools. We are thrilled to re-engage with our community in forums such as these.

Thanks to vaccinations, quarantining has been almost eradicated at middle and high school. Hopefully, the same will soon be true at our elementary schools. I give special thanks this year to our school nurses for their ongoing and truly heroic efforts.

To my colleagues, our community, and of course, our students, your creative, compassionate, and collaborative efforts are an inspiration. I thank you all, and I wish you all a healthy, peaceful and restful Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Andrew Selesnick
Superintendent of Schools
November Snapshots
Top left, clockwise: IMES kindergarteners sing Thanksgiving songs. KES first graders sort words by different phonics features. MPES third graders complete a science unit on force with a whole-grade tug of war. JJMS Family and Consumer Science class takes a virtual field trip to a hydroponic farm. Math 8 students gather data on rectangles throughout JJMS in their study of algebra. JJHS Vocal Jazz trio performs the National Anthem at JJ4Vets’s Field of Honor.
First Steps on the Reading Journey
Second graders listen closely as their teacher, Monica Lambert, said “thanked.” “The ‘ed’ suffix almost never sounds like ‘ed,’” she reminds them. A murmur rises from the grouped desks as students whisper the word to themselves, paying attention to the sound their tongue makes at the end. Was it “id,” “d” or “t”? ”

This is a glimpse of the systematic, explicit phonics instruction all KLSD primary students receive each day. MORE
Middle Schoolers Make Theater & Friends
John Jay Middle School’s Theater Club presents “Clue,” comedy whodunit inspired by the classic board game, on December 2, 3, and 4 at 7:00 pm, and at 1:00 pm on December 4. Tickets are $10 at the door.

"When you’re younger, you do theater to meet new friends,” said eighth grader actor Violet Oyen (Colonel Mustard). “When you’re older, you do theater to spend time with your friends.” MORE
Six Athletes Commit to College Play
Six outstanding athletes, along with their coaches, family and closest fans, gathered in John Jay's gym to sign their Letter of Intent, making their college athletic scholarships official.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am of you and what our female athletes have accomplished in this community!” AD Chris McCarthy said to the student-athletes.

Congrats to Seniors Inducted into National Honor Society
Congratulations to the 93 members of John Jay's Class of 2022 who were inducted into the National Honor Society!

During the ceremony, the student officers of John Jay's chapter—President Kaitlyn Varriale, Vice President Alyson Parker, Secretary Jessica Kennedy and Treasurer Amanda Albert—each lit a candle for one of the society's core values: scholarship, leadership, service and character. MORE
